That’s a nice Green Man. Though he, too, can look pretty scary when he wants to, with foliage springing from his mouth. The ‘foliate head’ (the term ‘Green Man’ was coined by Lady Raglan, a keen Folklorist) is another of those pagan images that sometime appear in or on old churches, too (Let’s hear it for subversive stone masons!).
