It’s rather simple, as Aygo explained.
The ID3 is a hatchback. Hatchbacks don’t sell well in the US. The Golf sold 22000 units in the US in 2020. Compared to around 60-80.000 in the UK the same year (couldn’t find a clear number).
Does make sense to not offer the ID3 in a country where driving a small(ish) hatchback is seen as unmanly.
Equally, we in the UK don’t get the Escalade. No explanation needed, the Escalade wouldn’t make it through half the roads in our town, let alone a normal sized carpark. That’s also the reason as to why the new Sportage won’t be offered in “original size”, but in an adapted size for the european market.
One thing to keep in mind is that they can’t just “decide” to now offer a car somewhere, it has to go through homologation, will need adjustments for the market (US cars for example need different indicators for the european market etc) – all that costs a lot of money. Under the line, it would just not be worth it to sell the ID3 in the US.
The Nissan Leaf sold 150.000 units. In 10 years.
