As others have said, in the first instance they should massively increase the choice of manufacturers, cars and model variants. For those who aren’t wedded to a specific car, this would open up a far better choice of cars, some with better lead times.
Secondly, increasing the order window by a few months would help. Allowing people to extend leases is all very well, but is a nice earner for Motability. No capital outlay for them and even more sacrificed benefits than the £10k that they already get over the standard 3 year lease. The current situation is a win, win’ for Motability and a ‘lose, lose’ for customers.
As an aside, I wonder if Motability Operations has reduced the numbers of staff who deal with negotiations and manufacturers, in order to bring operating costs down and provide better value to customers? It must cost them a lot less now that the scheme only has one quarter of the cars that it had some years ago. Of course, we all know that the answer will be a resounding NO.
