Tyres are always a compromise, I would rather lose 30 miles range if the car is appreciably safer. I always fit all season tyres, the car handles better, doesnt slip on muddy fields or lanes and will keep going in snow. Tyre spin in the wet or on slick roundabouts disappears and the range loss is tiny. For an organisation that campaigns for tyres safety they would be better urging people to use all season or winter tyres where appropriate. But its not about safety it just the usual misdescription and swapping safety for a headline range. Why should anyone take any notice? My family don#t. I suppose my three year recovery from a meeting with a runaway car in winter gives me a unique perspective. A copper told me the same, people just hope for the best. Four inches of rubber tyre between you and oblivion….no, lets hope. Just fit the best, its a false economy on the wrong or inadequate tyres. All that guff about ‘good drivers and driving safely’ is just that, a good driver stops shorter and safer on decent tyres. Evasive action is safer, traction is better. The only excuse, and its a valid one for lots of people, is, they can’t afford it. But, really ask yourself, isn’t your safety and the safety of others your top priority?
