My Corolla is a GR Sport estate, very nice indeed. It’s no lower than any other similar car and I’m guessing if you had no problem with the Golf you would have been okay.
As for the My Toyota app I don’t see the problem, it’s not like Toyota’s app is dodgey it’s an official app. I’m guessing more cars are on some sort of lease than not, so the drivers will not have the log book. I don’t know what extras you get from entering the log book details but there is an option to download map updates directly to the car when the car is connected to the home wifi but mine would not do it, I’m guessing to alter software directly to the car you need more proof of ownership.
Toyota provide instructions on how to download the maps to a laptop, it’s 12 gb, then unzip to a memory stick and update via the cars usb. I updated the map yesterday, you get three years updates free of charge.
