    As per Motability’s own website, some dealers do ask the customer for a ‘holding deposit’ when the order is placed, with the deposit deducted from the Advance payment on vehicle collection date:

    Personally, I wouldn’t do this, or as an absolute last resort I would pay it by credit card to gain Sect 75/75A cover incase the dealer goes into liquidation/bankruptcy after the order is placed (as the deposit is held by the dealer, not by Motability).

    However, asking for a deposit does not necessarily mean they are a ‘bad dealer’ – else why would Motability sanction the practice? However, it is up to the customer to resist, or go to another dealer.

    Likewise with optional extras specificed by the customer – some dealers may ask for payment (or at least a deposit on them) however Motability are quite moot on this point, but if asked directly, do say it is subject to the dealer’s policy!
