Hi BigDave. We will have to agree to disagree! I was not talking about CEO roles. The issue of Mike Betts has been done to death and I agree his successor won’t be on the same package. CEO salaries always get all the commentary but are often a red herring in my view, as they are one person. I am talking about the perks and benefits offered to all employees.
I agree with the salary range you quote as that fits with the person I know. However, they are at the very top end of that, still very young and not a graduate. My daughter, on the other hand, has a first class honours degree and earns 20% less and she is in a technical role! Most of her peers from Uni are currently earning less than her or unemployed. They would all kill for the sort of package offered by Motability Operations!
I further agree that defined benefit (DB) pensions are not as valuable as they once were, but they still remain significantly better than any defined contribution scheme, the latter of which is now the norm in the private sector. DB schemes were ceased in the vast majority of private sector companies years ago. In fact, in 2018, 85% of remaining DB schemes were all in the public sector. I suspect that’s closer to 90% by now.
Not that Motability Operations is a charity, although I feel that they should operate more like one, but it’s a myth that loads of charity CEO’s are paid a fortune. Exceptions can be found in any sector, but the vast majority of CEO’s of household name charities are paid between £100-150k. Many will say that’s a very good salary, but it’s absolutely nothing compared to the likes of Motability Operations, but, as I say, CEO salaries are a red herring as it’s one person and that’s not my point.
I have no idea what other government appointed organisations pay, so bow to your knowledge on that one, but two wrongs don’t make a right and I maintain my point that the big differences here are that Motability Operations are funded by disabled people’s benefits and they are a pure monopoly. That just seems wrong on so many levels to me but, as I say, we will have to agree to disagree! In terms of balance, though, I would concede that the service that they operate is excellent and I have never spoken to anyone there who has been anything other than extremely polite and helpful. Whilst I feel that they could offer better value for money, I would feel a lot worse if I felt that they operated the business model that they did but offered poor service!
