Having driven past Stonehenge on A303 far more times than I can remember, one negative created by the tunnel solution will be the loss of the spectacular view from the road that thousands have experienced and the countless questions asked by children as they journey to holiday further west. An education and knowledge which will in future have to be sought out.
But that’s the main reason for the tunnel apparently – people rubber-necking Stonehenge itself and thus causing large traffic delays.
One day, I hope we get someone running the country who actually cares about the motorist. I travel the M27 between Portsmouth & Southampton regularly and it’s a nightmare currently because it is being “upgraded” to a smart motorway. Nobody I know is in favour of smart motorways. They are downright dangerous.
And yet I also travel through Chichester quite often & that is one of the worse drives I ever do. Miles & miles of traffic – roundabout after roundabout. There was a plan, with investment, for a by-pass which has been ongoing for 20+ years. The whole project was scrapped last year because of objections on top of objections on top of objections.
The roads you really want money spent on (A27) do not get it while the ones that do (M27) don’t really warrant it. At least on my journey’s to Guildford, they finally built to Hindhead Tunnel to cut my journey time… albeit 22-years after it was first proposed!
