Never been asked for a penny up front so far, my last car’s AP & extras was £5600, so the dealer was on the hook for a good deal more than most. I turned up on the appointed handover day, paid by credit card (woohoo, mega Tesco points) and was away in the car in under an hour.
Car before that was £1695, different dealers, same treatment, turned up, looked the car over, did paperwork, paid AP, entered pin, got keys, declined the “show you how it works” rigmarole and drove home.
Maybe because we used small countryside dealerships & not big chains.
