A sign of the times, I think.
Although my local council have never ran such a service, the Royal British Legion (RBL) used to run a similar service for injured and older veterans called ‘Handyvan’.
However due to costs associated with it, and such as requiring safety certificates for even minor electrical and plumbing work nowadays, the RBL governing board decided to can the scheme in January just gone. The funds now being targeted to other projects.
Some of the other forces charities will still pay for minor works etc for needy veterans and if an adaption is needed for a war pensioner that ‘affects the fabric of the house’ a House Adaptation Grant of upto £700 is available from Veterans UK.
