Reliable, comfortable, big enough for the wheelie (which most medium size cars) but still fun to drive. VW Golf GT. 150bhp = 0 – 60 c. 8 seconds, so not earth-shakingly fast but fast enough for me.
It is oddly ‘soulless’, though. I used to speak encouragingly to both of my Vauxhall GTCs, and give them a pat when they did well (frankly, I treated them rather like horses). They each had a ‘character’. But the VW just does what I want, when I want, in a detached and clinical way. It’s still a great car, but . . .
