Also off-topic, a bit, but has anyone come across a sci-fi writer as good as the late and much lamented Iain M Banks? His work, particularly the Culture series, was simply amazing – inventive, intriguing, full of wonderful characters and never afraid to indulge in a witty sense of humour. The latter being terribly lacking in almost all modern “worthy” SF.
