I wonder how many people will be pushed out. I guess the likes of me (25K miles pa) will be the first.
Can you do 25k a year at present? I thought the limit was 60k over 3 years?
I strongly suspect that those of you who do high mileages will still be able to, but will just have to pay a bit more for the privilege, in exactly the same way as you would if you leased elsewhere. I guess that’s only fair.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think that the changes will cause as many people to leave as some think. If this forum is anything to go by, most Motability customers either don’t have the confidence or the financial ability to take a different route (especially if they insist on a brand new car every 3 years) or have a fear of buying second hand, even though that’s what the vast majority of the general public do! I think that the overwhelming majority of people will grumble, but end up just paying the additional costs.
In our case, we are leaving Motability not primarily because of the government imposed changes (although it’s fair to say that the removal of BMW from the scheme made the decision much easier), but because of the very poor choice of decent ICE cars. We don’t all want EVs, Chinese cars or low end European or Far East ones, and feel that we can do better with our money elsewhere. Even if the changes from July weren’t happening, we would still be off.
I think that the bigger exodus (but a forced one) will come when the benefits review happens, and a lot of people’s access to the scheme is removed. Even if the current government does yet another U-turn and ducks this issue, the next government won’t, as they all have the ballooning benefits bill in their sights.
