As stated above the wife found this online.
The new rules will will require a formal medical assessment starting 1st August 2025
Key changes include:
Mandatory GP certification of physical and mild cognitive fitness to drive etc.
Is there any truth in the above or scaremongering by the press?
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.

When I turned 70 I had to renew my driving licence – this repeats every 3 years.
Essentially you have to declare you are fit to drive – the emphasis being on you to declare any medical condition that might make you unfit to drive.
So if you have an accident and you haven’t declared any reasons you shouldn’t be driving – your in trouble.
As far as I know if there are any grey areas then you should get yourself assessed. Not heard of any upcoming agreed changes to this.
July 20, 2025 at 7:44 pm #309900It’s full of plans, maybe and could be…
Given it said to be starting July 2025, there is no official news on gov.uk orDVLA and nowt on TV suggesting any such change!
July 20, 2025 at 7:46 pm #309901…And the current official guidance

I have previously furnished DVLA Medical with my medical records after a phone assessment they confirmed in I am fit to drive, I am not 70 until August 2026.
I cannot find anything on DVLA site to support the above.

Hi Kezo that gives some clarity.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.
July 20, 2025 at 9:09 pm #309906The question is mate – where did this come from in the first place?
Some busy body interfering or from a government source, but it’s not gone any further or they hurd wrong? Either way there’s not much in the press about it, and we know certain press who will jump on this type of thing!
Anyway it doesn’t sound like it’s happening, so pointless worrying about something that may never happen 🙂
July 20, 2025 at 9:46 pm #309907If you have already been declared fit – then there shouldn’t be any issues – just like any other over 70 driver – every 3 years you just confirm nothing has changed to make you unfit – as Kezo said – nothing to stress about👍

Not alot with daughter – but, just finished watching film, finish up on forum I’m admin, meds, then it’s lights out!
July 21, 2025 at 1:05 am #309919Anything that requires self certification for such a safety critical activity is doomed to have failures. Personally I think everybody that has a driving licence should be reassessed every 10 years. Not the full test again, but an eyesight test so you can read a number plate, a couple of questions on the highway code and a short drive around the block. Not a ban if you fail, you get to complete it with a certain time period (3, 6 or 12 months?) before your licence is removed or restricted 🤔
I’m not having a go at us disabled or elderly drivers but all drivers cause the standards today are terrible ☹️ I think its crazy you could get a licence without ever being on a motorway, or allowed to go on a motorway, but immediately drive away from the test centre and head straight onto the motorway with a car/van full of people 🤯

July 26, 2025 at 10:35 am #310356I have my eyes checked at home every two years I know of people that are young and old that do not wear their glasses which is dangerous just because they are vain.
July 27, 2025 at 3:52 pm #310451I don’t know if it applies to the UK but read a story about all the fake news stories in the US about over 70’s having all sorts of medical checks with the undertone of just getting old folk off the roads there.
