EV Cable Security

Can anyone advise how secure an EV cable is from theft. There’s a lot of copper in them, I can imagine the scrap man taking a keen interest in 5m of thick copper cable. If the car is on the driveway charging, can the cable be secured to prevent theft?

Most EVs and untethered locks the cable into place, although a sharp hefty yank I expect will brake the lock clip.

I can imagine a lot of thefts if it’s that simple and they are not cheap to replace.

The car locks the cable whilst charging.  Likewise the charger will lock the cable.  Whilst they are unlikely to be substantial locks, judging by some people being unable to release their cable after charging because the charger has failed to recognise the end of charge they’re not easy to break without tools.

More likely is someone taking bolt cutters to a cable and leaving you with 2 connectors.  They would be gambling with a 7kW running through the cable but they’ve cut rail power cables whilst live.

This came up as a thread on Speak EV, turns out it’s a non-issue, no one has had, seen or experienced it yet.

Not that much copper in a 4mm core cable, hardly worth the effort compared to the ease of removing cat from a RAV4/ACross.

In the 3 years of charging I’ve come across one case of theft and that oddly wasnt the cables some moron cut TEN of the CCS plugs off the end of the cables at a brand new site in Uttoxeter.

Not only was that absolutely brain-dead but then to leave the cut end of ye cable just on the ground beggars belief.

Haven’t heard of anyone have their charging cable attacked damaged or stolen though
