Why are seagulls protected?

For the past two summers a pair of seagulls have nested on our next door neighbours chimney. The problem is when I go into the garden they attack me and the dogs, when I have them. Even walking on the street they are attacking anyone who comes within 100 yards of their nest.

The neighbour contacted environmental health who told them they can’t be touched.

The neighbour is planning to spike her chimney after the gulls leave, which I’m told is soon, so hopefully this will deter them from returning next year?.

Cant get my hard around why they are protected.

They are a pest and therefore should be prosecuted for grievous bodily harm, theft of chips, causing a nuisance to those around and defecating in publc places. Yet they are protected pests!!

Searingly they are just called gulls now as they are nowhere near the sea.

our gulls want to be identified as “Them” ?

I visit St Ives regularly, they are a real problem there, constantly stealing ice creams and chips. I remember a few years back one came down and took an ice cream straight out of my young niece’s hand. It was hilarious, she was crying for an hour! ? There was a story on Cornwall Live during the first summer after lockdown, a holiday maker punched a seagull in St Ives as it tried to steal his food.

Nothing better than sitting on the harbour wall watching the Emmet’s having their pasty attacked from the skies.

Porthgwidden for me. Watching the seals in the early morning. Lunch in the cafe then back to digging sandcastles in the afternoon with the family. The happiest of memories. Thank you.
