We have an EV on order a huge car with a low range and we live rurally, but before ordering we did an immense amount of research as not because we don’t wish to contribute in the reduction of carbon emissions, but sadly sit on the extreme lower end of the wealth scale so to us the potential saving to allow us to remain mobile for a few more years was the incentive. It did however become clear quickly that once the cost exceeds 39p per kWh for us it would be greater than running our current diesel car, making it essential to be able to charge at home for the most part at 5p per kWh.
it seems ridiculous that any company can charge any amount to forward electricity in the form of a charge point and quite ridiculous that some of these charges will be at 3 or 400% profit, I am guessing somewhere along the line regulatory control will be required, I appreciate they are installing the infrastructure but excessive profits from overcharging will need to be quickly addressed. In the short time after ordering the car we noticed that BP increased their charges from 15p with membership to 26p making membership pointless as Lidl are 23p and tesco 27. Definitely as we move forward control and regulation will be essential as the government will need to recoup fuel duty not just allow big corporations to line their pockets.
