can anyone simply put how motability works? From what I understand they take higher rate pip/DLA.

So do motability take every penny you get from your benefit? So example if I got £300 a month in DLA, would motability take the £300 a month in order for me to have the car? And I wouldn’t have access to that benefit money anymore? I realise advance payments have to be self funded. I’ve looked online but a lot of articles get confusing and just need a simple answer:)

You need to receive the higher/enhanced rate of the mobility component  be able to qualify for the scheme and it depends on the vehicle you choose as to whether the full amount is used to lease the vehicle

You will still be receiving the care component into your bank regardless of the rate at which you were awarded

        Hope this makes it clearer

at present the maximum they can take weekly is pip/dla is £62.25, there are vehicles that cost a few pounds a week less and also ones that you pay an AP for. it is paid direct from DWP to Motability any left over is paid to yourself in the normal way. depending on your needs or requirements and choice of vehicle along with financial position will determine if using you mobility allowance to join  the scheme is the right decision for yourself.

I know skyler’s post is an example but just wondered where the £300 a month comes but this has brought to mind a question?

Does anyone here only qualify for higher rate mobility without any care component

This could explain the figure of £300 as all of my higher rate money goes to Motability while I still get the care part in my bank every four weeks.

Just sort of making it clearer to skyler encase they are including care allowance into the Motability allowance if you see what I mean.

To simplify the PIP Mobility enhanced rate and the older DLA Higher rate mobility allowance are both £62.25 per week

£62.25 Per week (£269.75 per month) this  is the maximum  that the DWP would send direct to Motability. Some vehicles on the scheme are less and the remaining difference would be paid directly to your bank along with any care allowance you have been awarded.

If you choose a more expensive vehicle then you would pay an AP (Advanced Payment) to the Motability car dealership. The AP is set by Motability and the car manufacturer (although it is possible to get a discount on the AP by negotiating with the dealers or some dealers do advertise special offers – see other threads on here for current dealer offers

When I first got DLA I didn’t get anything for Care and so for my first two or three Motability vehicles I didn’t see any of my DLA.  I then got Care and so had a vehicle and also received the care element of my DLA (and now PIP) into the bank every 4 weeks. Hope that helps.

You give up part or whole of your higher mobility award depending on which model you choose.
most are whole award plus an extra AP that you pay on collection.
