Hi, While I don’t have experience of the VW, I do have experience of the Ford Grand tourneo Connect.
I beleive they are basically the same, once I had to wait for the Ford garage to get a part from VW! As you mentioned space, its the pure and simple reason. A lot of others are now electric. The petrol was my experience same engine in the VW, I wished I had the diesel as I think in hindsight it would have been better for occasions when fully loaded.
But I was concerned about access of diesel in my local city, but was unwarranted.
Even the petrol is good it handles well, the Ford has lumbar support which is good as im in pain constantly to different degrees. The ford handle ok, the lack of simple air con controls and nanny driving assistnance features are annoying. But the space and general drive for what is a van is very good. I am now going to look to move to an suv if the boot is large enough for my needs and an automatic. Limited choices either the VW or Skoda variant. If not another Ford or VW.
Posivites space (so much i will mention it agin space). Reasonable handling and alright looks (each to their own) for what is basically a van.
Negatives, petrol feels a underpowered when fully loaded, only really an issue due to inconsiderate folk on motorways. Infotainment system annoying, lack of air con etc dials. It is still a van when it comes to comfort and handling.
Good luck with choice.
I hope my message makes sense i suffer from fatigue and brain fog.
