We had a number of problems with our previous Motability car – a Volkswagen Tiguan. The emergency brake assist was activating for no reason, including once on a motorway (when it seemed to be triggered by the shadow of a bridge) and another time in pouring rain on an A road. That time there had been a van tailgating me until a few seconds before, and if he’d still been there when it activated he would have rear-ended us.

The dealer reprogrammed it but it didn’t solve the problem. I called Motability and said to them that whilst I was a very experienced driver, I had lost confidence in the car and was fearful that it would cause an accident. As a result of that call, they agreed to an early return with no penalty payment. We would have had a pro-rata refund of the AP but, from memory, not the optional extras. In the end I kept the car but deactivated the emergency brake assist every time I started the car.

As an aside, we’ve just ordered a new car that thankfully has so much standard equipment that we don’t need to add any options, which is a relief should we need to return the car early for any reason.
