Richard, I have to agree with Winston, you should be applauded for stopping.
It’s far too common for people to simply bluster through their lives as if they are the only ones on the planet who matter. Cause a hold up for whatever reason and you’re being abused for causing their hectic, petty lives to have been disrupted. Then, when they hear about someone jumping off a bridge, it’s all ‘where’s the Social Services, why can’t someone help them?’ all as long as it’s somebody else having to interrupt their day for the benefit of others.
It’s a wonderous world in which we live, currently. Pressures on everybody are higher, yet nobody has the time or capacity to care about those around them unless they’ve been affected by these problems either themselves or through close family/friends. It’s a shameful indictment of what we’ve allowed society to become.
