Having had to use, twice, a stand-in car while mine was repaired due to accidents I’ve found the problems arise if your Motability car is automatic and has adaptions to drive fitted to it.
If you don’t need any them it’s a simple job for the hire company to supply a car but if you need a hoist and adaptions to the controls then these cars need to come from a specialist car hire company. By their nature these companies operate in a niche market so are very expensive and you end up going from pillar to post while they come back to you with completely unsuitable cars because Motability / RSA think you can get by for a few weeks with a bog standard car with no mods and they really should know better.
I cringed at the thought every time someone comes belting up behind me with their phone in their hand because if they hit the back of my car (as with my two claims) it means nothing but a nightmare for me and much goes for any big mechanical problems with the car but thankfully that’s not happened.
You would think with Motability they would put a few of the returned and adapted cars aside for lending out on these occasions and save us the nightmares of dealing with car hire companies that have no experiences of dealing with the disabled, or so it would seem.
Once they find you a car everything is OK though my first encounter seemed to be from a company called Rent-A-Wreck but the seconded time in 2019 every thing was great once I got passed the two or three clueless hire companies and came across someone who knew about the different connection for the scooter / hoist combination.
I pity anyone having to go through this at the moment with all the excuses under the Sun they have up there sleeves for not supply a suitable car.
