Hello forum. I’ve done a search and can’t find a definitive answer. Can HVO be used in our motability cars. TIA Greg.

    There isn’t a definitive answer.

Firstly, you need to check your vehicles handbook (and/or consult the vehicle’s manufacturer) to see if your specific vehicle engine can use HVO, or in what maximum percentage it can be used.

Most road going diesel vehicles run on B7 (or occasionally B10 diesel) which is 7%/10% bio diesel respectively, which is the stuff available at almost all fuel stations.

If your vehicle can run on HVO, your next hurdle is finding HVO available on retail forecourts – more or less impossible. Often due to HMRC limitation.

HVO is already more expensive than commercially available DERV. With the Ukraine situation the price of the HVO raw product is only going one way at the moment due to limitation on base product supply. Most UK grown OSR is already contracted 2-3 years in advance so that isn’t going to make up the shortfall of base product imminently.

When you look down the HVO manufacturing chain, it takes a large amount of commercially made hydrogen, derived from carbon fuel to ‘crack the esters’ so is not ultimately as ‘green’ as most make out.

Before the recent price increase of HVO, we bunkered 20k litres of it for our farms as most agri-mechs can run on 50/50 mix HVO/B7 diesel, however none of our road going vehicles can use it in any proportion.
