I had exactly the same dilemma as you see my post of 17th December 2020 above). It became clear that I would have to change from my beloved 2012 Prius. I was tempted by the Prius+ but there is a problem with using this car. The rear (third) row of seats fold away into two “boxes” next to the rear wheel arches, and this effectively narrows the access to the rear the car, and width is required to allow the winch to swing round (at least on the type of winch I used).

I too wanted a hybrid care and also felt that, in this age of very sophisticated technology in cars, a Toyota model would lead to a lesser learning curve after the Prius. I would not normally have considered buying an SUV type of vehicle, but I surprised myself by going for a nearly new Toyota  RAV4.  The post 2017 models are all hybrids and being mobility challenged (and 80 years old) I find the driver’s seat height makes access reasonably easy.  The rear tailgate opens easily and there is ample room for winch and wheelchair whilst leaving the rear seats upright. I was fortunate that the car came fitted with optional running board/step (designed for access to on-roof luggage) as this makes access easier for my wife who is somewhat shorter than me. After a little time getting used to such a sizeablke car, I am bvery pleased with it. The hybrid versions of the pre-2017 RAV4 are slightly smaller but my winch supplier said they would be OK too.

My winch was supplied and fitted by Autochair. (see https://www.autochair.co.uk/).  I believg they have agents around the country but I am not sure if they cover everywhere. They came and surveyed my Prius and wheelchair combination and when they confirmed its unsuitability, were able to advise on which alternative cars were suitable.  In due course the Autochair came to my home and supplied and fitted and set-up the winch into my RAV4, the whole job taking about an hour and a half. The winch is straightforward to operate and I was very satisfied with the service I received from Autochair. My wheelchair is by eFoldi (see https://efoldi.com/which-efoldi.html) which folds quite compactly but is quite long when folded.

Please let me know if you have any queries.
