    Thanks for posting Brydo.

I’m already driving semi autonomously on motorways.

When I drove down to Ashburton on the M5/A38 all that was required was a fairly light touch on the steering wheel so my car’s computer didn’t tell me to “put my hands back on the wheel”.

There were four sets of roadworks including one with a thirty mile per hour limit. Under the new regulations (later this year) I would be able to sit and let the car’s computer do all the work with no physical contact from me. With the radar and camera set up, it already keeps me in the centre of my lane even round long curves. It brakes for me down to a full stop if necessary, then drives on when traffic starts moving again, all with no input from me. It safely keeps it’s distance from the vehicle in front and the only input from me is to indicate and switch lanes when I need to overtake slower moving traffic. It is unbelievably relaxing for someone like me with limited sensation in my left leg and some numbness in my right. I’m able to move both my feet regularly to keep as much sensation as possible without having to put my feet on the pedals.

Ashburton was a very comfortable two and a half hour journey with very little physical input from me. Yes I was still the eyes and ears overseeing, but in all honesty I wasn’t needed except for very minimal input.

Prior to semi autonomous driving I wouldn’t have attempted the journey, or if it was absolutely necessary I would have stopped at each service area and got out of the car to get the feeling back into my static limbs.
