The worry free / all inclusive aspect of a Motability lease is undoubtedly the major draw for many of us but, with many of the extremely low mileages that a lot of customers seem to be reporting, this is at one hell of a cost.

Understandably mileages may be lower than normal due to lockdown, but someone doing say 4,000 miles a year in a car with a nowadays fairly modest outlay of £2,000 (AP plus any optional extras), is paying over £1 a mile to use their car, even if it’s an EV, once you take into account the sacrificed benefits.

For those needing very specific adaptations this will be a cost that has to be suffered in order to be able to get out, but for others (and particularly those that do even less miles) it’s a very expensive way of getting around and in some cases using a taxi would be much cheaper!

At the other end of the scale, many trumpet the fact that Motability allow 20,000 miles a year, but how many people actually achieve this mileage? I can only recall two or three forum members ever saying that they do this sort of mileage.
