I was quite surprised when I read that it was going to be free to view for anyone with a Netflix account but the only problem I can see is that if you want to watch it live it is likely to be at about 3am in the UK.
I would really like to see the Hyundai Santa Fe come back onto the Motability Scheme but can’t see it happening.
The one I test drove a couple of weeks ago had a pretty quiet gearbox, although it did tend to stay in lower gears just a touch too long but I found that a quick paddle on the accelerator could encourage the gearbox to change sooner than it might if I just kept the pedal down. I would by no means describe myself as a motoring expert but over the years I can say I have driven a pretty extensive range of both manual and automatic vehicles and the Suburu gearbox didn’t stand out as one of the noisy ones.
What an amazing difference! Looking really good now Rich. It must feel such a relief after the complete botch of the first attempt!
I was starting to wonder what the delay was with them coming onto the scheme so it’s good to hear what your dealer has said Macca. The longer the wait though, the more I am leaning towards the Forester. I must have read about ten different reviews about them now!
different breeds lay white, same with brown and even blue. blue are rarest
Asda used to sell a pack of free range eggs that were pale blue and pink. Not seen them in a long while.
They usually have a few like that around Easter! :=)
I always thought white eggs came from white hens and brown eggs from brown hens???
We get white eggs fairly often here, so I’ve never really taken a lot of notice.
I can see the positives of this scheme but also lots of negatives, some of which Kezo has highlighted above. Also, no matter what assurances I was given about them not collecting any data on my driving style, speed, location etc, I wouldn’t believe them.
You may be doing your wallet a favour but, may not be doing her a favour in the long run, as she would have missed out on 6 years NCB, which would likely impact her just as much at 25.
Not so sure about that. Missing out on NCB will be offset by a much lower cost of getting insurance for the first time by being over 25. My daughter recently got her first policy after being on my insurance for a few years and paid just over £700 for fully comp. She is 25 and has held a full licence for 6 years but had no NCB.
Sounds like the new guy is going to be much better anyway Rich. From the photos you have posted it looks like it would be pretty hard to be any worse.
I prefer the 2.0i xe premium. I looked at the sport version but wasn’t keen on the colour flashes all over the vehicle.
Colour is a difficult one as charts or computer images are not always great representations. The one I test drove was magnetite grey metallic and looked nice but I would like to have a look at the horizon blue pearl and the autumn green metallic before making a decision.
What model and colour are you leaning towards?
No worries Macca. I might just end up joining you in taking up one too. The more I reflect on the test drive the more positives I see and the smaller the negatives get.
Really encouraging to read how well it handled on the rough, and wet grass surfaces Willis. Did you happen to glance at the fuel computer, what kind of mpg was it running at?
The Forester surprised me at just how good it was on rough ground/wet grass, even though I was expecting it to do well. I probably did it an injustice by not emphasising just how wet parts of the field really were. I should have mentioned that I called in at the car wash on the way back to the garage as I would have been embarrassed to take the vehicle back with filthy wheels and big splashes of mud inside the wheel arches.
As for the mileage, I got 31mpg over the thirty four miles and two hours and whilst some of that was motorway, most of it was around town or country lanes, but some was also messing around in a wet field.
So Willis, how did you get on with the Forester ?
It was good, but not as good as I really wanted it to be.
I was quite surprised when I got to the garage, as I had expected a shortish test drive, with the sales guy to come with me, so while we were doing a bit of paperwork and taking a pic of my driving licence, I asked if it would be possible to go down the gravel lane to where I live, just to try the vehicle off tarmac. The salesman passed me the keys and said I could take it where I liked as long as I was back by five now I had been added to the insurance! I’ve never had this before so was a bit surprised but it was really nice being able to really test the vehicle properly. As it was, I felt two hours told me more than enough so I got back to the garage about 1pm.
The car didn’t have quite the same ‘presence’ that the Torres did from the day before, although the interior seems a bit better made, with everything looking like it has been made to cope with real life just that bit better. I guess it just felt a bit more durable. The driving position was great and the massive sunroof made the cabin so light, especially compared to the Torres, although the drivers view wasn’t quite as good, especially when going around an island as the A post seems to be in exactly the wrong position.
The steering felt really light (maybe just because I am used to a Ford Galaxy which pretends it’s a tank) but the throttle felt a little unresponsive, especially at slower speeds, but the two most annoying parts of the whole test drive were a very annoying lane assist system that kept trying to put me back into the exact centre of my side of the road, even when I was trying to pass parked vehicles and an even more annoying collision brake system that kept causing a juddering braking effect when any other vehicle passed me too closely from the opposite direction! I’m sure I could have found a button somewhere to turn both things off, but as I was only test driving I left them on but also think they need to be less sensitive.
I was a little disappointed to find that the boot height was only 79cm (Exactly the same as the Torres weirdly) but the boot does seem big, especially when the back seats are down.
Over a very loose, rutted and uneven driveway, the vehicle had no issues with traction and also seemed to even the ride out and take away the normal sway felt but I didn’t really think it was a proper test of the car. so I took it further into the farm and crossed a wet grassy field but for all I noticed it could have been on tarmac. I even gave it a bit of steering wheel jerk as I was halfway across the field but the back end refused to slide around.
In summary, I liked the Forester and would be happy to have one if there was nothing better, but for now I’m going to hang on and see if anything else becomes available over the next three months.

Not yet, but Ssangyong/KGM are active on the scheme and the Torres falls well within the price restrictions so could well come onto the scheme soon.
If its the extra traction that appeals then what I like about the subaru is that its permanent AWD, whereas a lot of 4WD systems kick in the extra drive only once it starts to lose traction.
That’s a good point. Actually, I watched one of the latest video reviews of the Torres and when they were on the off road (slight slope and grass) pat of the test drive the front wheels spun several times before the 4 wheel drive cut in. That could be seriously annoying.

As for the Torres, it looks very nice, inside and out. It reminded me of a Discovery Sport in many aspects and has a nice feel, although I was a little disappointed to find out that the 4 wheel drive version is not yet available in the UK. Another thing was the boot was not quite as big as I had hoped. It is about 1100mm wide but only 795mm high.
The drivers door opens nice and wide and getting in and out was really easy, even for a 6’2″ and 16 stone bloke that isn’t the most agile. There are a vast array of extras included as standard and the driving position and view out is excellent.
I will see what the Forester is like tomorrow but the Torres has certainly got me thinking, especially if the 4×4 becomes available.

As much as I really wanted to, I had just collected the wife from the dentist and just pulling up outside the garage got me a look of daggers followed by a very garbled “Don’t even think about it!”
I will definitely be back there tomorrow though. It will be a case of perfect timing as I am test driving the Suburu Forester on Friday so will have the Torres fresh in my head, albeit just a viewing, but at least I will have some idea on whether it’s worth waiting to see if the Torres does come onto the scheme or not.
0nce we started talking about the floor pooling the guy kinda caved in and said we’re doing so much let’s start again. So hopefully. I had a huge row with the guy about those panel gaps. Funnily enough he had examples on their phone like I said to him all your work? Not surprised the gaps are all the same then. Said OK let’s get an independent wet room fitter in to write a report, he didn’t like that. Some of the stuff was just so egregious like that 5″ coving next to 4″ etc that they’ve just hot no defence. What’s really upset me though is being made to feel I’m unreasonable and he was still telling instead of listening
So frustrating reading your post so it’s hard to imagine just how bad it must be for you!
I feel so lucky now when I reflect on our experience as our contractor sat down with us right at the beginning, showed us options on flooring, tiles, bathroom suites and even light fittings and extractor fans. The different tradesmen went out of their way to make sure we were happy with every aspect of the job and the main contractor called in every evening to check how things were going.
