I ordered our new Tiguan 1.5 TSI DSG Elegance end of March to replace our current Tiguan 2.0 Diesel DSG SEL. I have ordered it in Moonstone grey with storm grey and have seen this combo and it looks very nice. I did want a different colour something bright and cheerful but the colour choice on the Tiguan range is very limited.I have ordered no extras as I did not fancy anything that was going to cost any extra as the Elegance it pretty much fully loaded anyway. It has a few extras over the SEL we have now like electric boot opening and rear camera and heated steering wheel which are great options for free. I have had no issues with the current car and whilst true drivers might find it a bit uninspiring, for me it is comfortable and has more than enough get up and go if required. I have the works order number and about 2 weeks after ordering checked on the ap and it had moved to order at works, the next stage is a build week but that could be a few weeks before it moves to that stage. We were told early July for delivery but I somehow doubt it will be that quick as all car companies seem to be late, with chip supply being the reason.

Thanks kbfern

I might be mistaken but our VW dealer told me the lead time on the 1.5 was a lot longer than the 2.0, although I think we are looking at 14 to 16 weeks wait, so it kind of tallies with your wait time.

For us the Panoramic is the killer feature as our daughter requires as much light as possible, the contrasting interior will also hopefully help her too… for example if she placed an object on a dark grey/black seat she may not see something is there to pick it up again, but if placed on a lighter background she may see it – makes all the difference, and the car is for her after all.

Didn’t even realise it has a heated steering wheel! I look forward to that.

Agree on the colours, again the darker colour choice is a must for us so our daughter can pin point which direction to be walking in when headed to the car unaided.

Congratulations! A lot of car for the money. You will find the interior space to be a lot bigger than the Q3. The Tiguan is almost Tardis like! I think you’ve made a wise choice re colours. We have a grey Tiguan SEL (forerunner to Elegance) with Storm Grey interior (albeit leather). We chose grey exterior as the grey plastic trim around the side sills cheapens the look of the car IMO and makes it look a bit ‘entry level’, whereas with grey exterior paint they blend perfectly and become invisible. The Storm Grey two tone trim really lifts the interior and makes it feel bigger. It’s also far less oppressive and bland compared to the all black interior and looks more upmarket as a result. Re the 4WD, it’s actually very good. When we had quite a covering of snow a few years ago I had to go to work and the car park was causing people major problems. Lots of cars stuck and sliding around. I popped the variable selector into ‘snow’ mode and it didn’t miss a beat. Very sure footed. Also, on icy and snow covered roads I maintained full traction. I hadn’t expected it to be as good as it was. You get a rear view camera as standard. It’s not great definition but is OK. It gets covered in muck in no time at all and I didn’t know until very recently that if you wash your rear screen when reversing it also washes the camera lens. The tyre pressure monitoring is a bit of a pain as you get warnings regularly in very cold weather (tyre pressures fall when very cold, so it’s not a problem). We wanted a change from the Tiguan so have ordered a BMW X1 but if we had ordered another Tiguan we would have opted for the space saver spare wheel as it raises the boot floor to the flush level we have now. Without it the boot floor is recessed quite deeply which would have been a pain loading and unloading my wife’s wheelchair. Final tip with VW dealers, which I have learned the hard way. Make sure you get an order tracker number. Until you get one there’s a good chance that your dealer hasn’t ordered the car and is awaiting build slot allocations. Once you have it you can check progress online. We waited 5 months for ours and that was pre-pandemic, so patience is a virtue! Enjoy the car.

Thanks for such an amazing response GlosGuy, really appreciated.

Noted on your points about the Tyre pressure monitor; I guess I figured with the extra boot space that not having a spare gave us, the Tyre pressure monitors would be a safe bet, we have a KwikFit around the corner from us and had occasion to visit them a couple of times with the Q3 (the first time they replaced a bad tyre with another make/different tread, which is a big no no on a 4WD – one to watch out for). I’ll also make sure to carry one of those cans of tyreweld too! Thankfully no issue with loading unloading a wheelchair, I can totally understand how you wouldn’t want to be lifting that in and out everyday, sliding it out at level is much easier. I guess if we find the boot to ‘deep’ for whatever we use it for we could always pay to have a space saver afterwards… in fact that’s something I’ll check with the dealer!

I got the order tracker number today… again thank you, had no idea about this.

We are very happy with the Q3 which we’ve had for way over the initial 3 years now, in fact I think it might hit 5 years by this October… all due to being messed about with cars that were initially available and then not, then the pandemic! So being patient is no issue!

Enjoy your X1 – I hope the change is welcome!

Excellent choice – such a lot of car for the AP.

Thanks Mike, it was you and another member from my Sportage thread, that guided me in the right direction on this one! So glad I found this forum!

We decided on a 1.6 petrol Sportage 4 last time and would not choose it again. I guess everyone and their needs can be very different but here are my pros/cons Pros Plenty of room, really spacious inside Enjoy the high driving position Good size boot Quite a number of ‘extras’ included which came as standard. These would have been charged as additional add on in other SUVs Cons IMO the finish in the interior is quite cheap looking and feeling Leather seats throughout are uncomfortable Rather dull to drive, 1.6 feels underpowered Some of the included extras are really poor quality, eg rear reverse parking camera. In fact I think the cameras are poor full stop In built Kia Sat Nav is pants MPG is pretty awful, expensive to run After care Service from Kia has been awful but that might be dealer specific We have a manual transmission and the gear box is clunky, steering notchy Happy to answer any specific questions or queries you might have?

Thanks John – great response, I too thought the Kia had a cheap interior but the ‘extras’ kind of won it for me, especially compared to others at that level of AP, and out of the cars we did test drive. Really appreciate all your pros and cons. We would be going for the auto and I too think that our Kia dealer (West London) is far from helpful / responsive and we are only at the investigative stage… you’d think they would be keen for the business, but instead seem far from enthusiastic! Initially this doesn’t bother me as it won’t necessarily be that person we would be dealing with for serving etc. Not a good start though!

I think we’ll take a look at the Tiguan as suggested here by Mark and then make a decision. Ultimately I’d like to keep the AP as far south of £4k with all the bits we’d like!

Had the Audi Q3 – S line Plus 2.0 TDI Quattro 184 myself, had to change it early for an Auto. Swapped it for an BMW X1 2.0 D Sport D AWD 2 years ago. Love the car. Even more than the Audi. Not sure if it will be on the scheme in the 2nd quarter. If it is and it is affordable that would be my 1st choice. The Kia Sportage has a good reputation, more importantly to you is how practical and comfortable is it. If it ticks the boxes I’m sure you will be happy with it.

Thanks tvs – I don’t think the X1 comes with a Panoramic, nor does it have reversing camera as standard (please correct me if I’m wrong). £1k for the panoramic as an extra! £900 for the pack that has the reversing camera (from looking at BMW website). Ouch!

Way to go Macca!

Big Dave’s post above is so on point. I have literally exhausted all our options now… much to our disappointment it is increasingly looking like we might have to get the Kia Sportage as it has everything on it we are looking for (in terms of features, albeit a much cheaper feel and ride) and I’m sure that would be the Grant department’s argument if I tried to go down that route to get the XC40 with extras! As our daughter is severely visually impaired, she functions better with as much light as possible, but Motability don’t see a panoramic roof as an ‘adaptation’, it’s a luxury! On the XC40 the roof is an extra, on the Sportage it’s included!

Wow TC, that’s a tough call indeed. I have a friend that is on palliative care for very similar at the moment and he’s managing to do much the same as you, make the most of every day. We went to lunch with him (socially distanced) just the other week and he was in very good spirits. I do hope you can manage similar. You deserve your dream car to drive around in for a while… or a track day or something if you are able to and you like your cars!

My investigations are at a standstill at the moment, the group Volvo dealership (Sytner) was disinterested in a decent deal, offering just 8% off on any optional extras. I’m waiting on Snows to come back to me with anything they can do but it isn’t looking promising and the original dealer after offering a free tank of fuel hasn’t been in touch since… so must be completely disinterested! Sadly, it might have to end up being the Sportage that we opt for.

I haven’t approached Sytner as yet, I plan to drop their Volvo dealer an email in the next couple days. Our Audi was in for servicing today and the dealer commented on what good condition our Audi Q3 was in compared to the other Motability cars they get in, which bodes well for the Good Condition Discount too!

Thanks Macca, thanks for the support… I’ll try to keep this thread updated if you like or I’ll start a new one with my findings! Considering you’ve made your choice already… what did you think of the other cars I test drove, any opinions on those?

Macca… you smashed the ball out of the park there! Congrats!

I’m currently shopping for a replacement for our Audi Q3 which we’ve now been in for well over the 3 year period because of shielding and lockdown. The XC40 popped up in my sights and I’m now torn between the luxury of the XC40 (with a few extras) and the Sportage (for cost effectiveness), and I’m not really sure they compare to be honest, the Sportage is packed full of extras but it comes across cheap feeling! I’ve test driven the following…

• Toyota – RAV4 (before lockdown and before Motability removed the AWD option)
• Kia – SPORTAGE ESTATE 1.6T GDI GT-LINE S 5DR DCT AUTO [AWD]
• Volvo – XC40 ESTATE 2.0 B4P INSCRIPTION 5DR AWD AUTO
• Honda – CR-V ESTATE 2.0 I-MMD HYBRID SR 5DR ECVT

I cannot however get any kind of deal, our local Volvo dealer won’t budge on anything aside from a full tank of fuel (currently), which to be honest is a pitiful offering compared to what you have managed to get! I’ve mentioned the Motability Good Condition Bonus too as our Audi Q3 is in pretty good condition and might qualify. They are a different dealer group than the Audi, the Audi was from Sytner and their nearest Volvo dealer is miles from us, perhaps I should drop them an email to see if I can pull off the same as you did?

Our 9 year old daughter is blind due to a Brain Tumour (diagnosed just before she was 4). The Audi Q3 was our first foray in the world of Motability and we threw a few extras at it to make it what we wanted at the time – with no discounts, we felt the sting afterwards. I would consider this for the XC40, to bring the features in line with the Sportage but it does push the price up somewhat!

Can I have some of your magic please?

Tim.
