Great spot @James295 Thanks for the heads up, survey done!

Well, the popcorn didn’t last very long. I don’t quite understand this thread, or see the point of it.
The bottom line, with Motability, you find a car you like, at a price you like, and go for it. Why should anyone else care what car you go for? I don’t give two hoots what anyone else drives, and I doubt very much anyone cares what car I drive.
What @on_the_spectrum seems to have forgotten with his vitriolic opening post is, all of us have driven ICE cars and well aware of the shortcomings/challenges of a BEV.

I’m glad that I’ve got a bag of popcorn left over from Christmas
Well pass it round

would you agree its doable charging once a month or maybe every 3 weeks?
If you typically do 540 miles a month, I would think you would want to charge more frequently as 540 miles, I suspect, is much further than most EV’s can easily achieve. There is a saying: ABC – Always Be Charging.
I suspect you would need to be charging weekly, that way you will ensure you have a good reserve for emergencies and also, you will not be on a charger for hours on end. You would need to be charging whilst you are doing something else, like shopping or visiting a gym.
As others have said, I am not sure if I would have an EV without home charging. It really would demand that you go in eyes wide open. It is a shame you can not have a home charger.

I must say, these days some people just say no to be awkward or lazy..imo
OR maybe they have been through the process? I cancelled my year old car and picked up a new one early this year and didn’t get the GCB.

Is it a possibility I could return the car over a year early because of this and if so would I not get the £500 good condition bonus if that still exists ?
Not a chance, would be my guess. Sorry.

December 19, 2025 at 11:19 am in reply to: Do Penny Pinching Dealers / Manufacturers Put You Off? #324639Yup, packs are okay if they have everything you want/need. It is frustrating when you require one thing but it gets bundled up with stuff you don’t.

An ICE car will cost a lot more to maintain than an EV. Unless you’re handy with a spanner.
I fancy an ID Buzz but they are super expensive. Too much for me.

Sadly, the Government (of the day) sees the reserves that Motability has built up and thought they’d like a slice of that pie. I don’t think it is anything other than that, they just need a smoke screen to get at it.

Who told you that? It is a bit worrying.
I think some new cars have a foot ‘hand’ brake? Is that right??
I would get yourself to a local adaptation company and check out / test drive with the various adaptations.

December 10, 2025 at 12:34 pm in reply to: bring back the jimny or build something from scratch #319751I love the look of the Jimny but I have to say, I was surprised at how small it was once I got in! A car that is function over form.
The trend these days is to get a car, say Fiat 500e and change the body to make a ‘new’ car like a Jimny. A better example would be the VW ID4 or Skoda Enyaq or Audi Q4 or . . . you get ma drift.
If you want basic, have a look at the Renault, er, I mean Dacia range!

Needless to say, I think you were brave to tell them
It wouldn’t be so bad but some had Motability Cars and one even applied for a grant. I think having very similar names is a mistake these days, good intentions, bad outcome.

I’ve had an EV for two or three years now and not looked back. I think I said that in a previous reply to you! I put on solar and a battery a month or so ago and my peak electric is now about a quid a month!

Ah right, EON are offering a very similar thing to Octopus with IOG.
What I was driving at is, there is a domestic saving to be taken into account that you don’t get with an ICE car. Regardless, you seem to have a good handle on it.
When is your contract due up?

I am a little surprised that ‘luxury’ cars have been struck off the scheme, rather than face some sort of luxury car tax.

It seems to me that you have done plenty of calculations. One that you haven’t mentioned, though, is the cheap 7p rate overnight. If you can shift your white goods to run then, you will save even more.

December 9, 2025 at 1:42 pm in reply to: Octopus Energy ramps up electric car charging costs #319130I’m with Octopus and the basic 7p rate isn’t changing. What is changing is that you only get 6 hours in 24 to charge your car. The off-peak 11.30-5.30 isn’t changing, your house will still benefit from that. And if your car charges outwith those hours, your house also gets the low rate. It is to stop people from gaming the system.

Replacing small 2032 or similar batteries is a pain, they seem to crop up everywhere. I’ve never thought about carry a spare, but I just might from now on.
Does anyone know about the Duracell ones? I seem to recall somewhere saying not to use that brand. I just can’t remember.
Skoda Enyaq Race Blue
I remember in August last year (2024), you asked about home chargers, you’re doing some toying!
Remember that the beginning and end of you journey, you can fill up at home for 7p/kWh. You only pay the premium price when you are away from home.
So, on a planned journey of 500 miles, you start with a full tank and drive for 300 miles. You top up 200 miles at 55p or roughly 50kWh x 50p = £25. Top right up at home at 7p is about £6 making the total for a 500 mile journey £25 +£6 = £31.
And that is in a much bigger and more comfortable car!
What ever you decide, it has to be right and work for you.

This has been an interesting thread. I can’t help but think it will take some time for anyone to digest and implement the new rules. I’m sure Motability are looking into the implications with vigour.
This is weighing heavy on my mind, and it is good to read what others have to say on this very challenging subject.
