Hi all, so now the XC40 has been around for a while, I was hoping that those that have opted for the T4 auto, either in 2WD or AWD form, could share your real world experiences of fuel economy, and what if any niggles have you found with the car, as well as things that work well.

      Cheers all.

Well, that was an interesting day.

The showroom we went to today we’d been to about 3 and a half years ago to check out the XC60. Since then its had a radical overhaul, and been made a good bit bigger with a full new workshop that is fully visible, and it also now has a handover bay. i.e, an enclosed visible bay in the building where customers collect their prepared new cars from.

The bay is bright and well light and is essentially an extension of the showroom, its a great facility.

There the customer is able to inspect the car and is given a full run through of the car’s functions before drive away. So on the customer service scale thats a good bit higher than “cheers, here’s your keys, see ya later”

We had gone to specifically view an R Design. As it happened a customer was collecting his brand new XC40 T4 R Design Pro today and it was sat in the handover bay as we arrived.

As he had been treated so well, the staff asked him if he minded us taking a good look at his car in the handover bay before he left.

He was a really great guy, recently retired, and had treated himself to the new car. He had loaded up the car with packs and instead of just standing back and allowing us a 5 minute look over it, he was such a nice bloke he willingly and enthusiastically  spent about half an hour with us telling us all sorts about the car and the staff simply left us to it. He was also happy for me to sit in it to see how the cabin felt with the dark headlining and half nubuck seats. Very surprisingly I loved it.

So all very unexpected, but most welcome.

Getting up close to the XC40 again underlined that its not a small car. After seeing the Inscription yesterday we saw a 2006 X Trail on the road. We ran an 06 X Trail on the scheme for 3 years and I said to my wife “I bet the XC is a similar size to that you know” upon checking today, the old boxy XTrail was actually just over an inch longer than the XC, under an inch taller, but actually the XC is almost a foot wider than that 06 Xtrail.

Whilst in the showroom, the staff parked an XC40 Momentum next to our Santa Fe in the carpark. That was great as it enabled me to compare the two in close quarters. Yes the XC40 is smaller that the Santa Fe but not by that much. I was also able to see a similarity in the C pillar / window design across the two.

The XC40 is available in the very eye catching ‘bursting blue’ but that comes at a premium price.

Instead I had a curiosity to see the Fusion Red as I think it could be a colour that makes the black plastic around the base of the car look less obvious and be easier to maintain than black paintwork. The good thing is this showroom has very large colour sample tablets so I could get a real good look at it. Its a proper metallic red as opposed to an orangy red, I liked it and as we’ve not had a red car for many moons it could potentially be a good choice :

But then if full contrast appeals, the very bright Silver could also be worth considering :

For now Mrs Macca tells me its the motor she likes the most so far.

So we’re still in no panic yo change the car but we’ll see what happens to pricing in Q1, and perhaps try and get a test drive in an R Design Pro auto when there’s one available, and see what we make of it.

When we got back in the Santa Fe today, whilst we could happily keep on running it, it did suddenly feel dated inside.

Do any of the mods have access to previous AP’s? If so it would be good to see the AP of the T4 R Design Pro Auto over Q1, Q2, and Q3 of 2019

Sounds like it needs a petrol

station added on to it too ! Have you looked at VW Tiguan R line ?

              @ Macca.

The current AP of the T4 R Design Pro Auto is £1999, same as T4 Inscription Auto.

The T4 Inscription Auto was previously £3500 so there’s a clue.

But actually I believe T4 R Design Pro Auto was new to the scheme for Q4.

                @ Menorca Mike.

As we only do 6k miles per year the way I look at it is that it will cost £220 more to fuel per year than our current petrol Q3.

That’s assuming an average of 29 MPG for the XC40, which as an Advanced Driver I hope to better!

I can live with that, especially as the XC40 was easily the best car of 5 we test drove.

But I agree it’s disappointing that many people are getting low MPG on a modern car. I guess for higher mileage drivers the diesel D3 would be a better choice.

I do like the Tiguan R Line Tech gor sure, but it can’t be spec’d with a heated windscreen which after many a lousy winter i do think i’d like.

And Mrs Mac tells me she likes the XC40 more at the minute, and she’s the customer (and the boss ?).

As for the hybrid XC40, it may not make it on, and we don’t have a drive at home anyway so home charge for a plug-in is not possible for us.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>So 72dudes, it sounds like £1999 is a bargain against Q3 equivalent pricing. As is usual with these things, theres the gamble that if we wait for Q1 it may always go back up by a good amount.</p>
Hmm ?, and to think that Johnsons Solihull, were offering a £500 discount from thus reduced Q4 pricing back in October, timing eh ?

Just a few things I don’t like on mine. Minor things really.

                          • the headlights are quite difficult to master, you have auto, half beam, day running side lights and a weird helper option (which puts a single Front fog light on when turning corners) can be turned off but as I mention, odd.
                          • the heater, at its lowest is still VERY loud.  When the temp gets warmer, the heaters get even louder.
                          • its not possible to lock the lighting options, or the driving preference(Eco, off road, dynamic etc)to your “profile”, ie like your seating position.
                          • the beeps that associate with driving speeds, and speed cameras have to be disabled every time you start the car or you get a beep if you go 1 mile over the speed limit, and an addition beep for when you are approaching a new speed limit. Very annoying,
                          • the incar WiFi is difficult to understand, you have a WiFi hotspot option, or “onboard WiFi” presumably for the media(Spotify internet apps, etc) controls — these appear to be two different things,(require a SIM card and data I naively presumed this came with the car) and I’ve not worked them out yet, I’ve used my own iPhone as a hotspot to connect the apps to it to update but that feels very weird. And the onboard WiFi is very weak and doesn’t reach my house, my phone does from inside the car on my drive way, less than 6ft away.
                          • if you are used to CarPlay— pay the extra for it, the difference between using it as I did for 4 years is painful, I’ll probably pay for a retrofit it because the onboard one is awful in comparison.

Guys, those of you that have the XC40 already, does the On Call subscription come included for the 3 year lease, or did it come at an additional cost?

                            Cheers.

Comes with it, not sure what the point of it tbh, you only need it to initially configure the remote start nothing else.

I’ve got most of the old AP’s. But the T4 R-Design Pro was only added this Quarter at £1999 AP.

Well, I had a little dialogue with the dealer, as we specifically want to test drive the R Design Pro Auto if we can, and we are happy to wait until they have a taxed demo of that spec to do it.

A test drive of a different spec to the one that we ultimately ordered back in dearly 2013, led to us making a bad decision on a car, which was terminated after only 3 months, so we won’t make that mistake again.

The uplifting news is that the test drive, when they have one, can be 9 to 5 if we want it to be. Thats a refreshing change.

My bad I thought the new xc40 petrol was a 1.5 turbo not 2.0.

Still shocking mpg tbh, when a new v8 450bhp Audi gets better mpg driven carefully.
