Sorry when I say warm I mean how do I get it blowing max hot.

Do you mean the hybrid “pre-conditioning”? If so, there’s cars where that feature only works at full tilt when plugged into a wall charger. I don’t know if that is the case for the XC40 PHEV too, but certainly could be.

If you’re talking the petrol version, you need to run it for a few minutes (5-10 in idle) before the engine is warm enough to produce waste heat. Basically, once it’s at operating temperature (around 90 degrees C, if my memory is correct), it’ll blow hot air. Until then, warm. And if you put blowers to maximum and fan speed on maximum too, it’ll take forever, so leave everything off and just idle the car until some temp is in the engine, then start it.

Remember the old times when engines overheated, and you had to put on heating to max to prevent the overheating? Same thing here, if heating/blowers are max, the engine (in idle) won’t reach operating temp.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Rene that make sense ?, please forgive my ignorance to the tech stuff (also hate instruction reading).. mines a petrol, I start it in the garage then venture towards it, what you say about the engine being warm is so right and obvious now, maybe I’ll just start it sooner to warm everything up .Thanks for your reply..</p>

Personally, I would move it out of the garage to warm it up..

It’s a stand alone garage Wigwam, so I just take a deep breath, open the door jump in the car and off, then leave it open till I return.

                  No worries.

At least you have a petrol lol, diesels take forever to get warm. My neighbour has a Dacia Duster with a diesel engine, his car isn’t blowing proper hot after 10 miles of driving.

As i said, leave heating/blowers off, start the car and have it idle for a few minutes, until there’s some heat in the engine – then it should blow hot. It goes quicker when driving of course, since you put load on the engine, leading to it heating up faster.

We usually don’t bother preheating the car, unless we take our animals to the vets. If a vet trip is on order, i’ll be outside 5 minutes prior to leaving and have the car idle (with heated seat on – heated seats are electrically heated, not through the engine cooling circuit), after 5ish minutes the cabin is cozy.

On the technical side, it’s simple. Coolant runs through your engine, from there to the radiator, and from there through the heater core. The heater core is just a heat exchanger, really. For the heating to get warm/hot, the coolant has to be heated by the engine first. There really isn’t anything you can do to speed that up other than putting load on the engine (driving), or revving it in idle up and down, though obviously revving a cold engine isn’t healthy for it either.

One big advantage of the plug in hybrid.  All bad weather preparation including defrosting, is done from the phone app while sitting having breakfast.   Unplug and go…

True to say we haven’t had any snow.

Rene I remember going full throttle along the motorway to Blackpool on a really warm summers day with all the windows open and the heating at full. Lost a few pounds in weight but at least the engine didn’t overheat ???

From memory, the Parking Climate utilises an auxiliary heater but it’s not available in the UK. Therefore it’s pretty useless for us.
However, if you start the car from the app and have left the heating set at a higher temp and also set the heated seats (if on your model) to auto (comes on under 10 degrees), then the car will start to heat if left to run for 7-10 minutes.
I sometimes run it for 3-5 minutes and even though not fully warm, the car gets to temperature pretty quick once on the road.

It’s a shame we don’t have it. Or didn’t at the time. Volvo change their specs more than Beckham changes his undies. ?

As for the Capri, I rue the day I sold mine.
Great looks and so easy to work on. My dad and I could change a starter motor in 20 mins. ?

I think I’d be the worst stalker ever.

The boy, Golden Balls, was reported some years ago as famously only wearing a pair of underpants once and then binning them. A fresh, brand new pair every day.

I am the opposite end of the scale as I only have one pair  which have served me well for 20+ years. ?
