Whiplash: New rules to crackdown on fraudulent insurance claims

As reported on the BBC today.

The government is promising more than £1bn in savings for motorists, as new rules on car insurance claims for whiplash come into effect on Monday.
The changes aim to reduce the high numbers of fraudulent road traffic accident claims made each year.
The new rules will enable insurers to cut premiums for millions of drivers by about £35 a year, say ministers.
The reforms will also include a simplified process for making accident claims online that are under £5,000.

I wonder if we will be inline for the savings to be passed on to us. Like the £50.00 rebate over the last 2 years.

“The new rules will enable insurers to cut premiums by about £35 a year”.   Call me cynical, but I doubt anyone will see their renewal premiums going down.

            Cynical? no, just realistic 🙂

I’m finally getting to see an orthapaedic surgeon this week to assess the damage to my shoulder following my accident last year.  An extra large Transit type van came across the carriageway and smashed into me at 40mph after the driver had jumped out and just let it go, completely wrote off my Yeti.

It’s taken 51 weeks to get this appointment!

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

Best way it make sure you have Dash cams fitted, front and rear. At least then you have evidence.

I don’t really see how it’s going to do much to stop it, whiplash leaves no detectable “damage” as such so a Dr can’t give you any sort of exam to prove you’re a liar, obviously they can form an opinion but there’s no empirical data & of course if you pay a Dr for a report they’ll often produce one in your favour.

As someone who’s been in an accident & suffered from whiplash its truly awful, I spent 6 weeks on painkillers & still suffered long after that.

Had my car hit from behind at traffic lights, cars in front pulled away, I leaned forward, took brake off and bang car 2 cars back hit them, car behind hite me & I got fired across the junction like a Newtons cradle. The Corsa that caused it was totalled, Mondeo that hit me had bumper damage front & rear, mine needed new bumper screws lol.

Cost me a lot of lost overtime but the eventual payout paid the council tax off so maybe just about balanced off but some of the jobs would’ve been £25 an hour so who knows….

Sadly this will be about saving insurers money not insurances purchasers.

After my previous accident in 2006, woman shot out onto a roundabout without stopping and T-Boned the passenger side of the car, I eventually got to see a consultant, kept me waiting 40mins past the appointment time as he’d had to drop his kids off at school!.  He was very dismissive that I actually had any physical damage.

I explained that I’d initially been referred to a physio who told me there definitly was. Again he was dismissive, I told him I was pretty sure that chap knew what he was talking about as was the physio for the County Durham Cricket Club 🙂

He asked me to remove my shirt and when he saw the nice “lump” I have sent me straight down to X-Ray.  His conclusion was that surgery was the answer, with an 80/20 prognosis, 20% of making it better, 80% of making it worse!.  Stranglely I told him not to bother himself any further.

Several cotrtizone injections into the rotator cuff later it worsened so now I’m stuck with it.  Bad news is following the smash last June it’s my good shoulder that’s now damaged as well!.

Add to that some spatial awareness issues on the right side like hitting my hand on the side of the tumble dryer or washing maching “hole” when putting clothes in or the side of the cupboards when getting plates etc. out.  Walking  through an open doorway and banging my right  shoulder and arm off the door frame, hitting the wrong keys while typing and having a memory like a fish I’m doing pretty well!!.

                      Just a quick update.

Saw the consultant about the shoulder damaged in last years crash (almost a year to the day!) and he’s not happy.  I need x-rays, then a proper hands on physio and a neurologist to look at the right side problems described above.

The only good news is when I got home there was an appointment letter for the “urgent” triple-phase CT scan for my kidney masses I’ve been waiting for for the last 9 months, hopefully this one isn’t cancelled as well.

Joss, are dashcams allowed on Motability vehicles? I do remember a thread about dashcams as you must ask RSA first but I have been hesitant as there were some concerns.

                          @Dave G

Indeed they are Dave. However. They are not allowed to be “Hard wired” to the car. You just use the 12v power socket. Same applies to rear dash cams.

                          This from Motability:

Fitting a dashcam to your Motability Scheme car

If you are a Motability Scheme customer and are considering fitting a dashcam to your Scheme car, here’s what you need to know:

The dashcam must be plug in type and not hard wired into the vehicle
It must be attached in such a way as to not cause damage to the vehicle (eg fixed by suckers and not permanently attached to the dashboard)
Any associated costs must be covered by you (including the purchase of the dashcam and any fitting/removal costs)
Your dealer may also be able to help advise you on purchasing and installing a dashcam
