Definitely the start-stop for me – it’s borderline dangerous in the XC60 I have at the moment as the power steering shuts down when the engine shuts off which makes it a real pain when slowing down for a tight junction when you really want to pre-turn the wheel a little to get ready to go around the bend. Might not be as bad if it actually waited for the car to stop but it shuts off the engine before the car actually stops and I don’t personally believe it makes any real difference to the economy.
Can’t say I’m happy about the lack of a spare wheel but, touch wood, in the last 33 months it hasn’t bitten me in the backside.

TosherFor me It’s the sat navigation. In my current car I can’t find an option to select an alternative route, eg avoid motorways etc. Oh and the dipping wing mirrors when reversing (which I switched off).
The modern feature which I believe is a waste of money is the auto park. Only used it once in 4 years.

October 2, 2019 at 11:50 am #89750Pretty much agree, I always, always turn off stop-start. It also shuts off the power steering on the S-Max and is laggy, so you can’t just go when a gap appears as the system hesitates slightly while it starts and moves off. My tests on my previous Citroen showed no difference in fuel consumption over 6 months use.
Also permanently turned off the lane assist, it was just annoying & always vibrating/bonging away…hmm, perhaps it was my drunken driving wot did it, lol. And, folks, before you go apoplectic, no, I don’t drink. At all.
And yes, I am the mug who pays for park assist and then never uses it, ever…
In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.

brydoI read somewhere your engine needs to be off for a minute or more before it is more efficient.
October 2, 2019 at 12:58 pm #89767Stop,,,,,,err,,,,,err,,,,,errr,,,,,,oh yes, start, works only when you don’t want it to, it does make a difference but it has to be off for more than a few seconds, i did a month on month test last summer on virtually equal mileage and journeys and saw a 4mpg difference.
Every electronic device/system on mine that doesn’t work properly which is mostly everything.

Charles GThe insane brightness of modern headlights. Hard to tell if drivers even have their lights dipped anymore.
October 2, 2019 at 1:23 pm #89771The most annoying thing on mine is when I put a bag of shopping or something on one of the the seats and when I set off driving I get the constant ‘bing-bing-bing-bing’ seat belt warning and the flashing red seat-belt sign on the dash.
I have tried to tell the car that a bag of shopping doesn’t have to wear a seat belt, but it totally ignores me!

October 2, 2019 at 1:23 pm #89772BMW and Audi’s refusal to fit indicators to their cars. How hard can it be?
October 2, 2019 at 1:27 pm #89773
PaulIndicators no one bloody uses them so why put them on the car.lol
<p style=”text-align: center;”>But in seriousness ‘start stop’ and car modern headlights in posts above gets my vote too.</p>October 2, 2019 at 1:27 pm #89774
brydoSame Dave its a bloody pest.
Its fair to say when choosing a car I look to get every gizmo available, but in reality i actually use very few of them, heated seats, cruise control and heated windscreen.
October 2, 2019 at 1:53 pm #89775Stop/start on the X1 is perfect, can’t fault it.
My biggest gripe is the seeming competition amongst car designers to make cars ever wider. If you look at old films, even in big cars of the day, driver and passenger sat shoulder to shoulder. Now we can’t get in garages, parking spaces, pass on narrow lanes etc. Why?
October 2, 2019 at 2:13 pm #89779Lane Keep Assist, because swerving into the path of a filtering motorcyclist on the motorway is potentially lethal, illegal & will also lose you your licence if the motorcyclist’s INNOV catches it.
Claiming that it was the car’s fault is no defence against a dangerous driving charge.

GeorgieThe ‘Collision Detector’: It has a complete meltdown every time I drive under the railway bridge in the A272 between Petersfield and the West Meon crossroads. The bridge is brick and quite long, set at at an angle across a bend in the road – the sensors takes one look at what seems to be a sheer brick cliff straight ahead and shrieks like a very loud, shrieking thing.
And yes, I do try to deactivate it on approach and deactivate it afterwards, but when I’m doing 55 – 60 in traffic both hands are usually too busy steering the car to start groping around trying to find the Off button.

GeorgieHere’s something that really would be useful, though – a ‘Long Range Lycra Detector’ to let you know there’s a gaggle of cyclists ahead – cyclists who are obviously NOT racing each other along the A31 because that would be illegal on a Public Road. They just happen to all be out for a nice ride and like to overtake each other.
A lot.

CraigStop/start, it’s not very good with the DSG gearbox.
October 3, 2019 at 12:07 am #89858Craig my friend you have truely mastered the understatement of how bad it really is, P O S.
October 3, 2019 at 1:37 am #89864stop start for me turns is off as soon as i get in the car
October 3, 2019 at 2:05 am #89868
PhiljbVw’s stop start here too, strangely dangerous as the engine cuts out before you’ve actually stopped at times.
Then if you have to immediately pull away again the DSG gearbox can be jerky. The system on our old Vw Touran seemed to work so much better.
The lane control, intelligent main beam and all other tech works really well and makes driving it amazingly relaxing if that’s what you want.
October 4, 2019 at 4:38 pm #90071The insane increase in width of cars, whilst roads remain the same width – or in the case of rural lanes narrower because of the lack of hedge cutting and general maintenance
October 6, 2019 at 12:27 pm #90362Big agreement with some others here regarding the lack of indicator use.
However, from the list, the lack of a spare ?
? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?
October 6, 2019 at 1:20 pm #90372However, from the list, the lack of a spare ?
When I got my previous car on the scheme it came with a can of goo.
I went to the local scrap yard and got a brand new (unused) full sized tyre and rim together with the packing’ piece that stops it rattling in the wheel-well from a rather poorly version of my car. All for £90.
When the car went back, I took the still unused tyre/rim and cut out thingy back to the scrappy and sold it back for £80.
I didn’t consider paying £10 for 3 years availability of a spare tyre too excessive.

October 6, 2019 at 1:25 pm #90374I’ve been carrying an unused spare wheel around in the back of our old Jazz for 15 years. It’s probably worth more than the car.

Spot on Dave ?
