Just about had enough with supermarket chicken breast. I cook a lot of curries and stir fries, the chicken from all the main supermarkets is pumped full of water, when you fry it off in the wok you can see the water coming out of it.
The result is rubbery tuff chicken. It’s all supermarkets currently, just read the reviews people are leaving. I thought it was me losing the ability to cook.I’ve just bought some from a local butcher, cost £11.99 per kilo compared to supermarket price of around £7 a kilo, I’ll report back when I’ve cooked it.
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this?

Yes, Joejo, I’ve noticed that. What I do is use some kitchen roll to soak up the water as you say if you don’t you end up overlooking it just to get rid.

I used the chicken I got from the butchers for a curry tonight and it was spot on, virtually no water came out at all. Think I’m done with supermarket chicken breast, I just don’t understand why they pump it full of water.

July 17, 2026 at 1:06 pm #374020Its always the case that local butchers and produce is far superior.
Likewise local bakeries are far superior to supermarket stuff.
Look at the success if Greggs, its beating supermarkets easy.
We have a few local bakeries that are extremely busy and do not use supermarket stuff.
When you are young and a family to feed, supermarket stuff does the job.
But as you get older, and have more spending power, quality is most important. Shopping locally or farm produce is the way to go.

Brydo, have a look at Al’s kitchen on YouTube, not made it for a while but the Jalfreze is lovely. The one I had last night was a new Madras 3 stage kit from Aldi, Bald Foodie Guy reviewed it last week on YouTube. They had madras, tikka masala and butter chicken £2.25. Was very nice, real rich flavour.

Totally agree Callum, I much prefer thigh but it’s a bit too fatty. I remember a few years back it was really cheap, not anymore. I tend to buy the 2 kilo skin and bone in packs and fillet them myself using scissors and a knife.

The chicken I got from the local butcher yesterday was perfect, you could tell when dicing it, it wasn’t slippery with water and the texture was spot on. Also, it was wrapped in grease proof butchers paper and placed in a sealed plastic bag, no heavy plastic container. Just a shame it’s £5 a kilo more😬.
July 17, 2026 at 2:08 pm #374029I started to buy organic chicken breast and whils’t it didn’t suffer white stripe disease, it can still be pumped with water no matter where you get it from.
Brining chicken breast etc removes alot of the water content, however its time consuming and not ideal if you want to rustle up a quick dinner.
July 18, 2026 at 10:00 am #374047@kezo I was thinking of trying the organic chicken but I read the reviews and some people we saying the same thing, chewy tuff texture.

My granddad grew up on a his families generational farm in the Wharfedale valley of W Yorkshire, with his father, grandfather and uncle. Sadly, I know very little why my grandad moved to a Chesire mid to large size small holding in Audley.
I fondly remember my grandad words “nowt beats a fresh chicken” and going out slaughtering, plucking a chicken and giving it my nan to cook. Not something, I could do myself mind you😂
July 19, 2026 at 12:10 pm #374100Kezo, when I was a child, my older cousin kept pigeons. I remember to this day him picking up a hurt pigeon and wringing its neck. I’m scarred for life 😂😂
