From now on, all VW ID. models will receive regular software updates via mobile radio. The first update ‘ID. Software 2.3’ provides improvements in the image recognition of the camera or the operation of the infotainment system, among other things.

Until now, the updates were only available in the test phase to customers registered in the so-called “ID. First Movers Club”. Now the updates are available to all customers of an ID.3, ID.4 and ID.4 GTX. In future, VW wants to roll out updates approximately every twelve weeks.

The over-the-air updates are being developed in coordination with CARIAD, the group’s software company. “The new updates are a central functionality of the digital, connected car. They will quickly become normal for our customers, in the same way as they have for their smartphones,” says Thomas Ulbrich, Volkswagen Board Member for Development. “Software development is iterative and fast. We work in short cycles, like a tech company, and provide updates to our customers at correspondingly short intervals.”

The update to version ‘ID. Software 2.3’ is intended to provide new functions for the ID. Light. It now shows indications that are intended to provide intuitive support for energy-saving driving and driving with the automatic distance control ‘Active Cruise Control’ (ACC), for example. The image processing of the multifunction camera has also been improved; it recognises motorbikes and other road users even faster. The same applies in the dark: here the dynamic high beam control – if on board – is to regulate its own light even more precisely. The graphics of the central infotainment display will be calmer and clearer and the operation more intuitive – Volkswagen says it is also incorporating feedback from the first ID. customers.

Volkswagen is also planning to generate more revenue in the usage phase through new, data-based business models – for services and functions that customers can add as needed. And precisely when they are needed. In the future, this could include Travel Assist for long-distance journeys or improved battery performance, and at a later date also highly automated driving. With these additional digital services, Volkswagen aims to generate additional sales in the triple-digit millions over the next few years.

These updates appear to be exclusive to the ID vehicles, that’s not the case. My Tiguan for example has been receiving regular OTA updates long before this became news.
