Hi all.
I’ve setup a new account so I can be anonymous.
I’ve recently managed to terminate my Motability lease early. I then used the online access from my account to ask Direct Line for my Claims History letter. Their page said 48 hours, so 2 days to get this via email. No sign so I rang them up to chase. Apparently they are inundated with requests for this letter. The wait time was estimated by the lady I spoke to at 10 days, so 5 times the quoted time. Sounds like there’s a lot of us sending the message that we’re not happy with the way things are going and are exploring our options.
I’ll follow up over the next few days with the choices I’ve made and my reasons for them. Cheers 🍻.

We are definitely coming off the scheme when the current lease is up, we’ll be getting the no claims letter ourselves. I hate to say it but it seems to me the right wing press have made getting a car on Motability a stigma.

Good luck I totally understand your reasons, I am still in 2 minds.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.
April 12, 2026 at 12:24 pm #353081Goodluck, I won’t be far behind you!
April 12, 2026 at 1:30 pm #353090I put my request in 3 weeks ago and chose the Email option for them sending out the paperwork.
Nothing so far, I think every man an his dog is asking for a no claims proof letter.
April 12, 2026 at 5:00 pm #353108That’s pretty unimpressive. Generating a letter like that should be no more difficult than pressing a button on a website and waiting for the email.
Always amazes me how insurance companies can quote you and insure you within minutes but when it comes to ‘admin’ stuff their systems seem positively Edwardian.
April 12, 2026 at 5:18 pm #353110It should take less than 5 seconds. My wife used to work for RSA (royal & sun alliance). If someone needed a no claims email, they would literally just press the send copy button and enter en email, Really was as simple as that , and this was over 7 years ago.
April 12, 2026 at 5:30 pm #353113That’s scary! 3 weeks and no letter! Sound like I have a good wait yet and they’re totally inundated with people like us. Maybe this is something that will make Motability sit up and take notice 🤔.
Appreciate the support from everyone. It’s sad that some of the old familiar faces are, like me, jumping ship and making alternative choices.
April 12, 2026 at 6:18 pm #353118It wouldn’t suprise me, if they were slowing the process down on purpose.
April 12, 2026 at 6:23 pm #353119April 14, 2026 at 8:22 am #353193My claim history letter appeared in my inbox mid-afternoon yesterday (13/4), requested on Thursday 2/4. Allowing for the Easter break, that’s really 5 working days from request. Looks like Direct Line are getting on top of this or else the volume of requests has reduced.

Interesting. When I called them a month or so ago to ask about this they said that a posted letter could take a week or two but an email confirmation would arrive within hours!
I didn’t put it to the test though as, when I asked them, they confirmed that they still limit how often you can request these driving history confirmations (I can’t remember if it’s once per year or even once per lease), so I dare not request it until I am within a month of a confirmed delivery date of my new private car, otherwise the confirmation will be too old to be accepted by my insurers and I won’t be able to request a new updated one.
April 14, 2026 at 10:18 am #353219After 3 weeks the email arrived yesterday, and it said 5 yrs no claims bonus .
Realistically how can you get an insurance quote without knowing how much no claims bonus has accrued?
I reckon the 5 years is part RSA, and part DLM, not sure when they changed insurer, it didnt seem too long ago…lol.
Direct line was my insurer before motability and they were good, and didnt try to rip you off at renewal. So I stayed with them. Probably go with them again if leaving the scheme, they have all the info on their records ..lol.
April 14, 2026 at 11:04 am #353228Worth noting that Motability / DLM make it very clear that they don’t provide us with transferable no claims bonus (as we understand it), but a driving and claims history. They are different, as someone who works(ed) in that industry explained on another thread recently.
When seeking insurance quotes we therefore can’t input it as no claims bonus, but there is a separate section that allows you to input the time that you have driven other vehicles and any claims history. Thankfully, it seemed to pretty much amount to the same thing when I inputted my data.
It is possible to establish your driving history, in order to get insurance quotes, by phoning DLM, as I did. Thankfully they don’t count the call as the one time (in whatever period) that you can formally request this info, so I was able to get insurance quotes with correct info, but am still able to request this info in writing within the month before I take delivery of the car, which is what I presume that an insurer would require, rather than a letter that is months out of date.
