Decided to buy a 50 inch with Freelyfrom Argos, got home screen cracked took it back to Argos who reluctantly accepted it was cracked, offered us the option of a 43 inch model, 24 days later screen packed up, both Toshiba and Argos totally in denial these TV’s despite numerous complaint online that these TV’s are not fit for purpose.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

Vestel (Turkey), they licence brands or manufacture low end TV’s for manufacturers, even Sony! Toshiba is one of the brands they manufacture for Toshiba in europe. Vestel have a reputation for low quality crap.
The 50″ made by?
As your within your 30 days of ownership or of a fault developing, I would stronly advice you to reject the TV under the consumer rights act. I would cont Argos head office to do so and follow up with a letter sent recorded delivery. Use a templte rejection letter or I can give you one.
Have you purchased a new tv yet, as can recommend to budget?
February 12, 2026 at 8:41 pm #338096If you paid on credit card, you also have section 75
February 12, 2026 at 8:56 pm #338099Ah yes, Vestel 🙁
I’ve avoided anything made by them for years!. LG are still manufactured by LG worldwide and so far I’ve not had any problems with the one’s I’ve bought. The proper Panasonic and Sony are also decent but the cheaper series are Vestel rebadged.
I have an older list of Vestel made TV’s I could post but it’s massive, 149 at the last count!
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

TCL make LCD screens for Samsung!

February 12, 2026 at 9:15 pm #338104@Phaedra is that a projector or tv and what wall would that fit on 😂
Its understood Panasonic has confirmed that it will begin outsourcing production of its higher-end TVs to a third-party manufacturer starting next year – widely believed to be TCL Czeck factory and TCL. Panasonic has mentioned have outsourced its cheaper models to Vestel. Panasonic will focus on R&D in Japan and europe. TCL makesome cracking highly rated mini LED TV’s.

February 13, 2026 at 12:40 pm #338117Our Samsung curved 50” tv is almost 9 years old and still going strong. Not sure if they are outsourced. Mother inlaw had a TCL which developed a fault after 3 years, she binned it. Mrs Joe keeps banging on about the Sky tv, but I’m not interested.

Samsung’s curved LCD panels were initially manufactured by Samsung Display Co., Ltd., which was a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Sony Corporation
Sony doesn’t manufacture the TV panels, they are purchased from other manufacturers, or manufacture its budget TVs and orders them from OEMs, which is quite a common practice across the industry.
Samsung LCD display factory was based in China, TCL has had alot to do with Samsung huge Chinese display plant. In 2023 Smsung exited LCD display manufacturing selling all shares to CSOT (TCL), at the time Samsung purchased 38 million LCD panels mainly from CSOT, it also buys displays from BOE, CSOT, LG, and AU Optronics (Taiwan) who’s factory is in China. Samsung also buys from HKC Displays, who manufacture a segment of low-cost TV panels in sizes 32, 43, 50, 55, 65, and 75 inches. These panels are in the Samsung Crystal UHD series TVs. Today Samsung manufacturers only its high end Neo QLED and Neo OLED panels. Previously Samsung used LG displays (LGD) OLED panels as did Sony, Panosonic.
LG, a subsidiary of LG Display, manufactures LCD & OLED displays. Only some models of TVs can be equipped with LCD panels from other manufacturers. it is easy to determine which manufacturer made the display on a LG TV. If it’s IPS, it’s LG; if it’s VA, it’s probably another manufacturer likely Chinese (VA panels are better). LG is a big player in OLED panels.
Hisense, TCL are well regarded for their mini LED TV’s which are seen as good quality by those in the industry for budgets from £500 upwards and compete in quality with main players .
Budget under £500 you will get a better TV from Hisense, TCL than what the the main player brands offer.
50″ especially 55″ onwards are generally better, as manufacturers focus more attention in mid range upwards.
Foxconn China (Taiwan company) manufacturers whats inside TV’s
February 14, 2026 at 8:31 am #338133We decided to stick with are 5 year old LG, we should have read the Toshiba reviews I automatically assumed they were a Japanese manufacture ?.

You’d be suprised mate, how many still assume they are still getting Japanese quality. The give a way when you sit down and think about it, is Japanaese stuff was never in the budget segment. TCL, Hiesense have R&D Phillips is owned by TP Vision Hongkong.
I bought a mid range entry spec 55″ TCL mini led, about 2/3 years at time of the ultra long thread finding Mike a TV, to replace the portble we had in the kitchen, much to the disgust of the mrs at the time and in many was prefer it to the LG OLED in the lounge. My daughter also has 75″ attached to the ceiling in the sensory room, to play quite music nd calming images😂 I have mid spec Hisense in bedroom. Phillips are decent with their famous ambilight tv’s
Toshiba story of the end
https://en.tab-tv.com/who-makes-toshiba-tvs/
The whitegoods industry is equally as bad if not worse Haier own Candy group (Candy, Hoover brands) Hotpoint & Indesit are owned Arcelik (BEKO) along with Blomberg. Hisense (Gorenje Asko) etc etc
However if it isn’t broke don’t fix it and when it does break ask!
February 14, 2026 at 9:41 pm #338157If you are going for a tv, look at the manufacturers who offer a 5 year guarantee straight out if the box.
There is a reason tv.s are ridiculously cheap.
I cant remember the manufacturers, samsung and lg?? Maybe?

Many manufacturers offer 5 promotional warranties from time to time, but the 1 year warranty remains the standard manufacturers warranty and the remaing 4 years by a third party such as D&G. Richer Sounds offer 6 years as standard on many TV’s, which are repaired by TV enginerrs not washing machine repairers. Costco offers 5yrs across most of its electricals.
Samsung don’t make LCD panels and rely on third parties such as TCL

If it is fused (ie has a replaceble 13A BS1362 catridge fuse) on the plug pins side and is showing no signs of discolouration around the brass pins, you will be ok 🙂

Optical or commonly refered to as Toslink and can be alternativel be HDMI ARC eARC however these are for audio mate, not video.
HDMI CEC, allows 2 device or more to communicate and control each other and needs to be turned on, in the device settings (TV), which probably won’t interest you either!
Recommend you just use HDMI and as before, don’t discount mini LED TV’s.
