and thus save £1bn – providing they become elected next time around of course.
Just when you think the scheme has had enough knocks lately & negative changes – now this.
Further details & costings at her Tory speech tomorrow (Thursday).
The death of Motability for many, many users really could be a lot closer than you think if this happens. The advance payment increases will be more ridiculous than they are now – and that’s saying something!

Tories and Reform are both targeting the disabled. I’ve no idea how Motability continues within Reform’s current voucher policy or even if it does at all.
Even Labour are saying the bill has to reduce, although I’m hearing noises that they are looking at how to support people into work (carrot) rather than just force us or cut money.
I'm Autistic, if I say something you find offensive, please let me know, I can guarantee it was unintentional.

September 2, 2026 at 11:11 pm #378105I haven’t heard about this. Are they proposing to mirror the VAT exempt rules away from the scheme (I.e. only full time wheelchair users needing substantial modifications will qualify for VAT exemption)?
If this comes to pass the scheme would lose its USP and in one fell swoop would become meaningless.
The ridiculously high APs for very modest cars, once added to the huge value of benefits that need to be sacrificed, already makes the value of the scheme questionable for many. Remove the block VAT exemption and the scheme will make no financial sense at all for anyone who doesn’t meet the VAT exemption criteria.
Hopefully it’s a case of misreporting?

Add Labour to that list. They all have the disabled in their sights. I was amazed that the recent proposal to get disability claimants to do the equivalent of ‘Community Service’ (given to offenders) in order to ‘earn’ their benefits didn’t even get a mention on this forum.
P.S. Sky News have just mentioned the Tory proposal for Motability to lose its VAT exemption, along with many other proposals, all to raise £10bn more for defence.
September 3, 2026 at 12:25 am #378109My wife’s hairdresser keeps the most extraordinary hours and had been seeking an apprentice to lighten the load. The local Jobcentre duly sent along a young woman who appeared perfectly suited to the role. A start date was agreed … yet the young woman simply failed to appear.
After a lengthy exchange with the Jobcentre, it emerged that she had returned there claiming she had not been offered the position, subsequently suffered some sort of emotional collapse, and proceeded to apply for… WAIT FOR IT….
Quite predictably – PIP!

September 3, 2026 at 9:28 am #378120Why the nasty gang want to always attack the most vulnerable and not the rich who are getting richer and make us poorer makes no sense even though we as disabled pay high tax on smaller incomes.

Agreed, although the recent changes, which have happened under a Labour government, have already rendered the scheme pointless for many.
Sadly, I can see the scheme getting to the stage where the only people left are those who need WAVs or adaptations, and those who don’t have the means, or wherewithal, to go elsewhere but insist on having a brand new car, regardless of the fact that it makes no sense financially and they could use their substantial benefits far more sensibly elsewhere.
September 3, 2026 at 9:36 am #378122I mean motability is the least of our worries if either get in but especially Reform, we could see our very rights squashed.
September 3, 2026 at 9:40 am #378124even though we as disabled pay high tax on smaller incomes.
That’s not true though. Many disabled benefits, including the PIP that people sacrifice to join Motability, are tax free. Disabled people also get the same personal (tax free) allowance as anyone else. With the two combined, a disabled person who gets higher rate for both daily living and mobility can earn £10,119 PIP plus £12,570 Personal Allowance = £22,689 per year before even paying a penny of tax. Those who are able bodied can only earn £12,570 before paying tax and, as a result, will hit the higher tax rates earlier.

the welfare bill is unsustainable and needs reducing, else you will get nothing when the country goes bust.
Too many years of the uniparty allowing those reckless to get benetits, tge lazy getting it for adhd, depression and other l7es.
The country has had enough and even liebour and lib dems see this.
General election now
September 3, 2026 at 10:26 am #378132You dont know what you’re talking about, and this is ableist opinions in a forum that’s meant to be accepting towards disabled people.
Those conditions you mentioned ADHD, anxiety and depression come in scales ahd can be very disabling at the later end. I bet you didnt know severe anxiety can cause anxiety induced voices, hallucinations as well as psychotic like symptoms. Also ADHD can have many other conditions, more than two-thirds of people with ADHD have one other condition and 50% have more than one.
Quit listening the media and actually research.
September 3, 2026 at 10:33 am #378133By the time the current fledglings across parliment have finished, there will be absolutely nothing to differentiate Motability from private leasing, with the only difference of being able to shop around for private lease deals.
The illegals should never have been allowed to form part of the welfare system, making the benefit figurers more skewered than they actually are!
September 3, 2026 at 10:34 am #378134Also my younger brother would be classed under Psychiatric disorders which is what mental health falls under as well as an array of other conditons. He gets a motability car when he’d likely be classed as autistic as DWP record you under the condition that affects you most. He’s also got down syndrome and he’ll always be the mental age of a 2 year old. But both would put under that statistics of Psychiatric disorders.

September 3, 2026 at 10:38 am #378136Illegal immigrants have no Recourse to Public Funds meaning individuals without lawful residency or settled status have no right to claim public welfare funds. Broader whole-system costs for asylum is estimated between £7 billion and £8 billion annually a fraction of the welfare bill and with current trends even if you somehow cut it all the rest of the welfare budget would swallow that in a year or even less.
September 3, 2026 at 10:58 am #378138It’s very sad to see what this forum is turning into.
Used to be a pleasent place to come for advice and general chit chat on cars but now look… Politics, immigrants, talk about someone’s wife’s hairdresser spreading rumours about a pip claiment…Not good.
September 3, 2026 at 11:07 am #378140I do blame the media here like opinions have became so polarised its so hard to avoid stuff these days. Its even worse in public, ive been called awful things because I use a wheelchair.

Your right however, its worth noting that still applies on the main forum, but not the “off topic side” where you can discuss almost anything not necessarily car related.

This is incorrect so. No Recourse to Public Funds is for legally arriving Tier 2 Visa (skilled) immigrants. Illegal immigrants receive lots of things the Tier 2 ones cannot even dream about. For example Tier 2 immigrants must pay NHS fees for the duration of their visa in advance.

Motability VW Touran Family Pack May 2019 (happy customer)September 3, 2026 at 11:37 am #378143Both groups are subject to NRPF and neither can claim mainstream means-tested welfare. Asylum support is basic subsistence while claims are processed, not welfare entitlements not mainstream welfare. Either way, none of this touches the core point even the full asylum system cost at £7-8 billion is a fraction of a over £300 billion welfare budget.

Unfortunately, you’re right.
What isn’t helping is that disabled people have been framed as a major cause of the country’s economic woes, funnily enough by the very people who both allowed disability benefits to get this big and who are entirely responsible for the drop in economic growth and public services for the last decade and a half.
Under these conditions a lot of disabled people who are already struggling are on almost constant high alert, so when stuff like this comes up, they’re very much on the defensive. Add in a long term stirring poster like Southamman, who tends to say little until offense can be caused, and we have this type of situation.

September 3, 2026 at 11:54 am #378145Badenoch has just mentioned this at today’s Conservative Party Conference.
She confirmed that they plan to axe the VAT exemption for Motability.
I agreed with a couple of the things that she said, namely that it is a state licensed monopoly and it’s wrong that the CEO is on £500k plus £300k bonus & benefits for a closed shop.
However, she went on to say that there are loads of people with Motability cars who do not need them and re-quoted the utter lie that someone has a Motability car for just having tennis elbow.
Badenoch said that they “intend to keep all vehicles that require wheelchair access etc”, so my sense is that, like the other political parties, they want to get the scheme back to a place where it is for those with physical disabilities only, but how they square that with the fact that mental health conditions are now classified as disabilities remains to be seen.
I guess that the only way to do that would be to disconnect the automatic gateway to Motability that receiving the higher rate of mobility PIP gives, but it’s anybody’s guess at this stage. The forthcoming benefits review may answer that well before the next general election, especially if they totally re write the PIP criteria.

The prepaid Aspen card is worth £8.16 – £49.19 depending on whether they are in hotel accomondation or not. There are some small additional amounts available for young children and pregnant women.
£660m to France
Estimates of the UK cost of illegal immigration vary widely because different reports count different things.
The Home Office budgets enforcement at about £482 million in 2023–24 (resource spending) while impact assessments and watchdogs point to much larger asylum-and-accommodation pressures running into billions a year. Political groups and think‑tanks publish far larger lifetime or programmatic totalssome disputed, so any single headline number must be read beside its assumptions and omissions.
Disability and health-related benefits account for 13% of the welfare bill (although .gov expect this to rise by 29/30.
September 3, 2026 at 12:33 pm #378152Where discrimination takes place is judging disabled many wheelchair bound people cannot afford the high WAV vehicles and many struggle with small or larger cars due to their choice. They we are physically and mentally disabled but may choose car of choice so these thick think they know best really need to be educated as there stupid choice of words sounds like nazi germany destroy all disabled and mentally ill plus other rhetoric is not helpful and a foreigner running the tory party is not who I would vote for.
September 3, 2026 at 12:36 pm #378153None of this challenges anything I said. The Aspen card proves my point, that is subsistence while claims are processed not welfare entitlement. On costs, the IFS and Treasury audit put broader pressure estimates at £6.4 billion, with whole system costs reaching £7 to 8 billion when everything associated with asylum and illegal migration is counted, so if anything I was being reasonable with my figures.
On disability, the 13% figure is understated and uses a narrow definition. The full health and disability bill for the 2025/26 is over £77 billion. And that is before you get to pensions at £177.7 billion and working age and children welfare at £145 billion. Total welfare spending is over £333 billion this year. The annual increase alone from last year is nearly £19 billion, meaning the rest of the welfare budget grows by more than the entire asylum system cost every single year.
