the last week is my first week unemployed in 49 years, so the planters at the front of the bungalow are showing their age, been ther 6 years now and some of the wood has started to rot. so i decided to build a new one and renovate one ive moved from behind the bungalow. slow process as i have to sit to do most of it.

@mitch on a more serious note it’s imperative you keep yourself busy. I retired early 16 years ago to look after the wife and there’s a lot of free time to deal with.

I have a lot of interests to keep me going but even with them, during the winter months in particular, the days can seem very long.

Do you have any interests or hobbies you can rely on to keep the body and grey matter occupied?

thats the challenge @Brydo pretty much alone, i have just started an 18 week exercise/diet course through the gp to try and shift some weight but uts difficult when your so restricted exercise wise and my general diet isnt bad fairly low cal and relatively healthy. the exercise will be key, theres chair exercise classes and twice a week i go to eckington gym for weights and bikes. the lady there seems to know her stuff and the exercises are specific to my issues. which is far better than the physio departments oh heres a list of utube videos just copy them. the first one said get on your hands and knees lol my knees are so shot they should be called notknees just pain. so i didnt even attempt the first one and got told off for complaining to the physio.

anyway were 2 weeks in and so far so good. and it gets me out of the house.

this was the before 5 years ago a mix of different planters that had started to rot so i decided to merge them so to speak into 2 larger planters.

you can see the remnants of the old planters on the left a myriad of creatures are within slugs beatles worms and some slimey stuff thats pretty  revolting and some “wood” is basically powder.

not too bad considering the weather weve had, nightmare keeping them watered and bug free. theres a bit of ellowing and somethings been munching at the leaves but they seem to be holding up. the got drenched yesterday afternoon and today so hopefully that will see them through the stress of being moved. i will get some feed tommorrow and some ground cover plants to put the cats off. with luck they will flower again before winter.

the ones at the back have flowered really well this year.

front project almost done added some heathers to the roses. the second bed will have roses too and the order is in for bare roots from david austin due early nov.

so now its back to the back and digging over the wild flower bed, so i have to deal with the clay again oh joy.

the clay as you can see is in layers and comes out in football size lumps so they need chopping up into flakes and then i have 10 bags of manure and 10 100 litre bags of compost to rotavate into it. another couple of years it may be close to decent soil lol.
