Tharg, If you can afford it. A Sonos wireless speaker would be great. They are not cheap at around £170.00ish but worth every penny. Top quality sound, can handle streaming very easily. You can also add more speakers in other rooms.
Don’t worry to much about range. Because you will be streaming from your laptop via your wireless router. Your laptop should also have bluetooth built in ?? if not you can buy a bluetooth that plugs into laptop. So really all you need is a wireless speaker to stream too.
Sonos speakers come with an app to control everything. So in fact you can use it independently from your laptop. I think I will buy my self one for Christmas. https://www.sonos.com/en-gb/easy-to-use

December 2, 2020 at 6:57 pm #130968Tharg Sonos speakers are fantastic we have them dotted around the house and the sound quality is great. We have a soundbar which is connected to the tv with 2No. sonos 1 speakers which creates surround sound, brilliant.
As Joss says they are not cheap but if you use them a lot they are worth every penny.

Anything i post over three lines long please assume it is an article lol.December 2, 2020 at 7:15 pm #130976ThargJoss, Brydo – hear what you’re saying re the Sonos speakers. Trouble is I’ve got the Quad system, bought before I’d worked out the value of streaming. So I’m largely using CDs and vinyl (reason for buying Quad) because I’ve got a lot of good LPs. Don’t really want to bypass the Quad with Sonos; at least, not yet. May have to because, aside from the PC delivering digital data into the system DAC through RCA connection, more modern stuff like mobiles and tablets will only connect via speaker leads which is useless. Will try a Bluetooth receiver to see if it makes any difference – I assume that I can send digital data into it. Will let you know how it works…
December 2, 2020 at 8:53 pm #130988@vitalspin but then you have to use the worst operating system Winwoes 10 I have ever experienced. I have iMacs and a top of the range Winwoes 10 laptop. Winwoes requires booting everyday, sometimes twice, iMacs never reboot unless its an Operating System upgrade. You can run Winwoes on a Mac if you must, in fact when I tried it Winwoes 10 ran better, faster and with a load less trouble on a 10 year old iMac than on a 2020 Lenovo laptop.

January 21, 2021 at 4:20 pm #137118@joss New computer recently did the update thing. Much swifter than older model. However, since that update, everything seems to take twice as long. Particularly true when accessing Internet. WMC pages takes (relative) ages to come up, for example. Is this common after an update? Are Msoft slowing us down so they can sell something to speed up again? Does not seems to affect madam’s tw@fone nor my Fire tablet. Can I do anything to get speed back up?
January 21, 2021 at 7:33 pm #137159You could try just going back to the last recovery point first to see if that helps. Also try identify the latest update you installed

January 22, 2021 at 8:33 am #137210Tharg It is best to set windoze update to only download but not install. That way you get to choose what to install. You can then check what the update is for, and if there is any potential issues. As you know windoze can release an update to fix one issue, but then create 10 other issues.

January 22, 2021 at 5:22 pm #137283@joss Thanks, again, for tech help. Reverting to previous thing speeded everything up to normal once more. Took some doing because Windoze changes the names of stuf and their locations so much – just to stop us mending their cock-ups, I reckon. Will try to do the “download but do not install” thing next. My appliance does not have the route you quoted to get there but a bity of Googling will sort it, I’m sure.
January 22, 2021 at 5:58 pm #137291@Tharg your welcome👍
what version of windows are you using? Settings > Windows up date > Then in blue, on the left hand side > OS Build Info.
Copy and paste here > Device specification.
Copy and paste here > Windows specification.

Current car: Peugeot 308 GT Premium 1.2 Pure tech Petrol.January 22, 2021 at 9:29 pm #137306Tried that, Joss. Works OK to Windows Update but after that no sign whatsoever of “OS Build Info”. Exactly what I meant by eternally changing stuff so we can’t understand. Give me some time to punt about in the system and search for OS build info. Get back to you tomorrow. Cheers…
January 23, 2021 at 9:25 am #137332Tharg I have to say my windows install is highly modified. I made a lot of changes. So what I see maybe entirely different to what you see on your system.

Current car: Peugeot 308 GT Premium 1.2 Pure tech Petrol.January 23, 2021 at 9:44 am #137336Hi Joss
Finally found the spec’ stuff – had to go in a couple of more, different levels to get it. Tried to copy and paste but it won’t let me copy from Settings. Going to try and take screenshot (never done this on PC, only Macs). Back soon…
January 23, 2021 at 10:00 am #137337Will have to give up for the moment – other things like cooking and shopping to be done. Followed all the various Googled ways of grabbing screenshots; none work! Will try later…
January 23, 2021 at 10:05 am #137339lol just use windows snip tool. it comes with windows. That way you just select the area you want as a rectangle. Hit snip and save to desktop for easy finding.
Joss
Current car: Peugeot 308 GT Premium 1.2 Pure tech Petrol.January 23, 2021 at 10:14 am #137343Brilliant, Joss. Yours were the only instructions that actually worked. Others said that the snip thing automatically saved the snap which it don’t, Your have to grab the little info box before it disappears in order to get save as option. Mac was so simpler. Shft Cntrl S (I think).
January 23, 2021 at 10:28 am #137348As I suspected Tharg, you have the windows Home version where as I have windows Pro version. There is a big difference between the two. Mainly in the back end.

Current car: Peugeot 308 GT Premium 1.2 Pure tech Petrol.January 23, 2021 at 4:40 pm #137407Thanks again, Joss. I take it from what you say that I will not be able to do the “download but not install” thing. No prob’s. Will just do the revert thing after a download if it slows stuff down again.
January 31, 2021 at 1:14 am #138251not a problem more a niggle on my part of not knowing, im not the most Tech savvy and this might sound obvious to the more in the know people amonst us, But for a while my laptop has been saying low on storage, its never bothered me as i only use it at home for the forum, Youtube, google earth etc i dont need to store stuff on this one, but because the notice came up again the other day when transferring some video files to upload to the Forum i decided to delete some things to free up space. i looked through what i could delete and as i dont need all the original stuff thats on the laptop i deleted the 4 Acer programs from when i got the laptop. that freed up some space and ive thought nothing of it until tonight whilst watching a couple of Youtube vids, sorry im getting there lol. now i noticed one of the videos looked great quality wise and just thought they must have a great setup, but then i noticed the picture quility looked better on a users channel i m used to watching, so i watched one of watched before and noticed that that too seemed better. So my question is would the freeing up of space improved video quality although videos seemed fine before or has Youtube done a update and improved something because it is noticeable. now i cant decide if the videos look better on the Tablet and Tv as im not so used to watching them on those. And No i havent been to specsavers in the last couple of days.
January 31, 2021 at 7:49 am #138253Hi JS
First off good and regular house keeping of you PC/laptop is essential for smooth running of your device. Are you using win 10? if so home or Pro version?

As for anti-virus and anti-malware I usually recommend Panda and MalwareBytes.
Both have free versions available, auto update themselves and have minimal intrusion on the running of the PC/Laptop unlike other well known similar products.
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
January 31, 2021 at 1:35 pm #138287its windows 10 home Joss, there was always still 2.3GB space so i dont see that would effect picture quality, it really is noticeable, Youtube videos look so much better in the last couple of days. ive stoped windows updating so its not anything to do with that.
January 31, 2021 at 6:18 pm #138318The more free space you have the better you are. Make sure you regularly delete Temp files and other stuff you don’t use. Laptops come with so much bloat ware from new. 90% is useless.
So has deleting helped with the quality of YouTube channels is hard to say really. What I would say is some of the stuff you have got rid of may have been stifling the performance of your laptop in some way.
I am not aware of any enhancements YouTube have made to their platform.
Stopping windows update is fine. I only allow major updates on my system. They usually are done annually, but of late it has been bi annually. So just check win updates for major down loads.
Talking of storage I have just added a new Samsung Evo 970 500GB M.2 drive Talk about fast, oh boy. I will be migrating my c:/ over to the above. Once I have done that I shall remove the 2 Samsung 500gb HDD. That will leave me with 3 samsung SSD drives and 1 M.2 SSD at 500 gb So no issues with storage for me.
