More an observation than a complaint or rant.
Car went into Kwik Fit the other day for its MOT. I sat by the viewing area waiting for the car to be put on the lift, and it never appeared. I did a quick check on the app to see where it was and found it around the back ally. The lift, brake testing, light testing, and emissions testing equipment were all in the main workshop – by the viewing window. Over the next 50 minutes the status of the car didn’t change (doors remained locked, alarm active, and no signs of any life in the car). After 50 minutes, I saw the car appear, a guy gets out, connects up the rear seat belts, took some pictures of the tyres, and at the same time, the MOT showed up on the Gov website. I wish my private cars would have that treatment!
I never received any paperwork, so I assume Motability customers don’t receive a physical piece of paperwork showing the MOT status and a copy of the emission test?

By law they have to stick the probe up the pipe for emissions, unless an EV.
August 11, 2026 at 1:06 pm #376861So they didn’t do the MOT?? I’d be furious about that, Motability car or not. It’s a safety check and everything should be checked. Moral of this story = don’t use Crap Fit for MOTs. P.S. I’d be reporting them.

Where I used to live there was a testing station that entered the emissions manually (which they didn’t) to circumvent the actual test. This came about because some models of car could not hold a steady fast idle.

They couldn’t have done. My car app is pretty reliable and it showed a car locked and parked for over 45mins around the back of a testing station. I’m having a think about what to do.
August 11, 2026 at 4:20 pm #376869Our last Mobility vehicle at the main dealers when having its 3 year service the MOT had a different date and mileage, all on the same day, I don’t worry it not my money or vehicle..
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

It is your money though. You are paying over £12k plus AP to drive around in that car. I therefore expect it to be serviced according to manufacturer’s requirements and MOT’d properly to ensure that any potential safety issue is addressed. Whether I’ve been running privately owned cars, company cars or Motability cars I treat them all the same.

I did question the dealership they told me Mobility is the customer not me, I gave them a bad review online which they were not happy with and had a word with Mobility who offered to service the vehicle at another dealer. It was in 2023 when Mitsubishi left the UK, the dealership changed for a short while to MG, MG were caretakers dealers for Mitsubishi. We changed the vehicle shortly to a Suzuki Across.

August 12, 2026 at 10:22 am #376899I assume motability customers are not given a copy of the MOT or Emissions test. Kwik Fit never gave me anything. I can’t even get a copy online because you need the 11 digit number on the V5C, which is not on the copy of the V5C motability give you.

August 12, 2026 at 10:37 am #376902You can make a complaint, even anonymously, about the MOT test centre to the DVSA via the gov.uk website:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/report-an-mot-tester
By doing so, you may help prevent dangerous or unroadworthy vehicles being issued with a MOT certificate. At least it may help Motability customers from treated this way by contractors to the scheme.
August 12, 2026 at 10:50 am #376903@BigDave I’d like a copy of the MOT and Emissions test first before I approach Motability.
August 12, 2026 at 11:16 am #376904@BigDave I’d like a copy of the MOT and Emissions test first before I approach Motability.
I don’t think Motability or KF hold any obligation to supply those to you.
In any case I was inferring that you report the matter direct to the DVSA, cutting out Motability.
Motability appear to be very ‘cosy’ with their contractors, hence they probably would take no action anyway. All they would probably be bothered about nowadays is having a ‘pass’ certificate for when the vehicle is subsequently sold/auctioned, thus increasing its sale value!
If you are certain of what you described, then reporting it to the DVSA, even anonymously, may well have greater consequences for the test centre. Particularly if others have also reported this MOT centre previously or do so again in the future. Plus you will be helping to keep potentially dangerous or unroadworthy vehicles off the roads.
August 12, 2026 at 11:27 am #376905I’ll pass it over to DVSA, at least it will go on record in case other owners make reports.
August 12, 2026 at 11:34 am #376907Sounds dodgy that does.
Can’t fault the MOT tester at my Citroen Dealer. Totally 100% thorough at his job. So I know the car is in good hands with him.

August 12, 2026 at 11:37 am #376908My views on Kwik-Fit and Motability I’ve said before about tyres with a nail in them and 2K miles on the clock being renewed when there was a 90% chance they didn’t need renewing.
Kwik-Fit are having Motability over and I’ve told MB so but worst still with the 6 tyre rule there having us over too and we have no recourse what so ever.
That said, I had my last car MOT’d at KF with no problem, well seeing this I assume it was MOT’d, but the guy made a note on the MOT about clearing something that was blocking my view through the windscreen. That something was the dash cam that was behind the rear view mirror on the passenger side and impossible to see from the drivers seat. I do wonder if MB see that and think I’m driving around like a teenager with furry dice dangling from the mirror.

August 12, 2026 at 1:45 pm #376911I did write a really long detailed reply and got a wordpress error !
It was really interesting as well if I say so myself. If anyone finds it let me know 🙁
It may be the one above this post that is awaiting moderation 🙂
Its now popped up below this post.

The problem is proving they didn’t place it up the pipe.
In the case I cited above, the MOT tester was old school (in his late 70s). During fast idle he was required to hold the car between 2.5k – 3k RPM for what I think was 60 seconds. The problem with my car and many others at the time (2012-2015) was that when the fan kicked in the revs dropped below the lower limit. At one point there was me, two fitters, the tester, and a friend all trying to maintain the fast idle test on a 3 year old car without success. To avoid the car overheating, the tester contacted someone at DVSA or whoever it was back then, and they said he can carry a manual test taking readings from the gas analyser (that was placed up the exhaust pipe). So whilst the pipe was ‘up em’ so to speak, he had another way of taking readings. However, other testers in the area had a range of figures noted down for various models, and just used to enter those instead of carrying out the proper test. I was under the impression that there were plans to place analyser online linked to the MOT system so it had to be carried out, I assume that has not materialised.
