last oct i moved into what used to be a council bungalow now by an arms length housing association.

basically the back garden if you can call it that consists of 8m x 12m of uneven grass and grass is being generous with a path down the centre from the back door to the back hedge. the left hand side is relatively flat. but the right hand side slopes away from the bungalow and from the path to next doors fence. the bottom right hand corner is approx 18 inches lower than the path.

being a good boy i wrote and asked for permission to lift the grass on the right hand side level the top half of the right hand side and step the bottom half put down weedproof membrane and gravel. build some raised beds.

boy what a palaver i unleashed, got a letter yesterday with a list of conditions and requirements the killer being that all work must be carried out by a qualified contractor etc etc.

you would have thought that they would be grateful someone wants to improve it.

ok the aerator died, the motor runs but the blades dont turn so i reckon the drive has become detached somehow. as i am not mechanically minded i wasnt about to go looking at its innards, so i rang screwfix on the off chance and blow me down with a feather they said no problem bring it in and swap it.

i felt sure they would make a fuss and blame me for overworking it etc. but no drama or anything, half an hour later i am putting together a new one.

        well done screwfix.

Screwfix are very good with their no quibble attitude if something goes faulty. I’m a member of their electricfix side and never had any issues in returning/exchanging goods, even for a higher model right up to the day the guarantee runs out.

the beds arent bad, some of the early flowerers are going over but the roses are coming through.

@kezo, the first aerator must have been faulty from the get go because this replacement one is superb, those big chunks of soil in that first picture it marmalises no problem at all and it just keeps going its almost like its got double the power. the difference is amazing.

ok update on the left hand side project, just finished digging over the whole grass area that was, although calling it grass was a bit generous. the so called soil is more acurately called clay and required layers of manure, bark chippings and soil improver layered on and left for a month or 2. then it was rotavated several times so it now looks much more like soil should. although at the moment a lot very dustlike as its parched.

no sign of any rain or thunderstorms for that matter.

anyway utilising the pallets that all the manure etc was delivered on and some new decking boards i have built a raised bed for the far end and as soon as we get some rain i will be scattering wild flower seeds over the rest.

                    last of the digging lol.

                    a largish raised bed 4.8m x 1.2m x .5m high.

                    just need some rain lol

At least you got the bulk done before the rain

ok, update time lol. finished the last of the rotavating and raked it reasonably flattish and sowed the wildflower and grass seeds and got the netting up to stop the birds feasting just before the thunderstorms came and dumped about 3 months rain in 12 hrs.

since then its been perfect, a days rain followed by a few sunny days then more rain, almost perfect.

today i have removed the netting and i reckon it will work.

                            and the roses doing ok

the back end where its still bare earth is going to have weedproof membrane put down tommorrow hopefully and bark chippings on top and eventually a raised salad bed and some spud tubs put on it probabl not till spring now.

hi all, just finished the pre winter tidy up, weeded the beds topped up with compost etc.

the left hand side is almost done more chip bark required closest to the bungalow and the wildflowers are going mad even though they were seeded late, hopefully they will over winter ok and we will get some colour in the spring.

6 bare root roses planted in the long bed (15% off from david austin) bargain lol and i may see if i can get some hard geraniums to put in the front. ma be a bit late for bulbs but i will see what i can find if not those will wait for next year.

thanks all, its been a slog almost 2 years to do what at one time would have taken a months worth of weekends.

but at least the bones are there now, just a case of topping up with chip bark and another bag of gravel.

then its just weeding and planting seasonal stuff and bulbs.

will be interesting to see how the wild flowers go.

ok its been a while but the weather is quite good so i took a few pictures.

the wildflower bit has gone mad probably due to the amount of muck added.

but its coming together, still a work in progress.
