here we are awake at 5am again lol. unable to sleep so trawling through the suv sized options and previous cars considered.

the renault symbioz esprit alpine has reduced in price to 393 wpms. thats the middle option but gives you electric seats and tailgate heated seats and steering wheel so all the nice to haves and a decent mpg. the drawback was the door entry shape i want to recheck and see if i can find a comfortable wa in/out.

the cupra formentor v2 has gone down to £343 and was a suprise comfortable sit test, v2 gives you all the nice to haves as well. its drawback is the 40mpg which given the plunge in my mileage isnt a deal breaker now as i cant see my mileage increasing unless you know jobs going for a 66 year old. i do like the styling i know its a bit marmite.

the quashqai 1.5 e-power n-connector £347 wpms, ap has remained pretty steady the last couple of quarters it lacks some of the nice to haves heated stuff for winter.but is a nice place to sit.

the mg zs and hs trophy are the bargain pricewise they have all the kit but there was just something about the cockpit that didnt click hopefully the test drives on the 24th will put that to bed.

citroen c3 aircross max the ap went up to £627 so is above what i am comfortable with but the cockpit and test drive comfort keep it on my list along with the budget option of the c3.

mini countryman electric monochrome remains on the list as the sit test was so good like putting on old slippers lol. just a question of can i get my head around the charging. and the 0ap is very tempting.

i am going to go to chesterfield at 10.30 as most of these dealers are on the same street.

ive booked mini and mg test drives so will do the same for the others and see if there are any deals  to be had.

sensible head says one of the hybrids but the mini and the cupra were nice places to sit and are tempting.

i may even risk waiting to see if the citroens come down next quarter, being very selfish i could order something this quarter and change next if prices come down although i am not too comfortable with that.

ok symbioz is def out spent 20 minutes with trying allsorts but its a no.

shame the austral is so expensive because that works lthogh its a lot bigger than i need.

the formentor is in i am gobsmacked it works as its so low compared to the others but the door shape etc and the fact the v2 has electric seats makes it easy so ive booked a test drive.

also went back to citroen and both c3’s are the easiest so far.

I’d deffo check out the Qashqai Tekna ePower.
It has heated front seats, heated steering wheel, electric boot, HUD, electric drivers seat (not passenger unfortunately) and a glass roof (non opening).

Best of all, it only has an electric drive train. So non of all this mechanical hybrid gubbins, gears/CVT or drive train. It drives just like an EV, and you definitely notice it.

Just fill it with petrol so the generator can do its thing when needed.

cant run to the tekna only the n-connecta so its missing some nice to haves for winter. its still a contender for the e-power and the comfort i test drove it when i got the juke last time. but i decided it a bit on the large side for my needs. but this time i think i will need the extra room in case i have to have a wheelchair etc. plus theyve tweaked it a bit since then.

after the water bods have sorted my meter out tommorrow morning i will go over to nissan and arrange a test. couldnt today as they dont open on a sunday.

Symbioz is worth another test drive!

Part of me thinks the MG ZS \ HS hybrid test drives should be booked together?

Mitch ; have you looked at the Renault Captur Esprit Alpine? Great little SUV which now comes with the new 1.8 full hybrid self-charging system? It’s got all the bells & whistles and is £623 on WPMS.

@solent60 like the symbioz the doorway/screenline shape size and height do not allow comfortable access same as the arona. lol i have almost tried every suv type vehicle under £700.wpms. the symbioz is perfect in the esprit alpine if only the doorway was austral shaped. the austral would be ordered tommorrow if it was under £500. the back seats and boot are far too big for me but i woldnr be in them lol. the front is perfect.

                  @kezo
the mg test drives are on the 24th. by then the rest will be done assuming i can get a quashqai sorted this week.

i may consider waiting until 1st april and see if there are any reductions in the c3 aircross, austral and petrol minis but thats a risk.

ok nissans test drives booked for friday so we have a full set now. by the end of the month i will have driven every car on my list.

the kit spreadsheet is done and as far as nice to haves etc the best are the citroens, mini monochrome,mg’s and the formentor. in order:

                    mg

                    formentor

                    mini monochrome

                    citroen.

Test driving the QashQai might be counter productive, because if you like it your budget (which you must stick to) doesn’t extend to the variant with what you need as essential kit – A trap I have often fell into myself!

Without further sounding like a nagging granny😂 the Citreon C3 is mild hybrid and the Aircross (145) full hybrid), so try to make a mental note so not to get mixed up and loose on economy.

Good to see you trying an EV, whether it makes sense is another matter, but at least you have drove one.

If you have time, try to familiarise how to turn off speed limit bing bongs for peaceful test drives, although all cars will have shortcuts for this and other driver aids, that you’ll soon get use to on the car you eventually choose.

given my mileage reduction the monthly fuel cost is less of an issue over comfort. in a way some of the nice to haves particlarly the winter deicing stuff ive managed without so far lol. the juke is the prime example the tekna has heated screen mirrors seats and steering wheel which is the main gain from the n-connecta but is 370 more.

the other thing is how much weight to give to maybe needing room for chair/walker in the future will treatment delay or stop worsening conditions. on a pure initial cost basis the mg’s and mini cover this whereas the qq gives more room but no gain in kit.same spec as current juke.

are the heated nice to haves really that important as i dont need necessarily to leave for anywhere early in a morning now.

as you can see i am going round in ever decreasing circles as usual over this lol.

i am using the same test drive rote for them all so i am hoping something will stand out simply from an enjoyable drive point of view.

going throgh the specs on those being considered :

c3 max both the c3 and the aircross have wireless phone charging, heated seats mirrors and steering wheel and screen. but the seat adjustment is manual, good cameras and a sort of hud.

the formentor v2 has electric seats with memory and it moves back when opening door etc.heated stuff and cameras wireless charger electric tailgate.

countryman has heated washer nozzles, heated stuff electric tailgate hud and cameras.

the juke tekna is 597 for heated screen seats wheel etc.and the qq is same spec as i have now 347.

the mg’s pretty much have all the above apart from washer jet heating.

heated nozzles would be handy, last 3 days it took ages to get washers working but how often is that lol.

interesting day ahead mini countryman test drives monochrome and petrol 1.5c classic and later the cupra formentor v2 could the winner be here?

interesting phone call from citroen rep, he rang yesterday 5ish as hes on holiday until 24th and wanted to touch base and hinted that there may be a deal to be done on the aircross ap.

i have decided that i am going to be strict on the ap and keep it below 500 which at the moment would exclude the aircross , juke tekna and the petrol mini’s other than the base model.

one thought ref going elec the monochrome is 81.46 saving 5 per week which is 780 over 3 years.

i reckon charging at dobbies will add 20 to my current monthly fuel bill not the endof the world anyway but thats 720 over 3 years so i am 60 in pocket so to speak. althogh there will be the new p per mile charge.

so over the 3 years the elctric wont cost me much more.

The benefit of the Cupra Formentor and subsequently the MG HS is they are in the next catagory and get goodies such as memory drivers seat and easy entry exit drivers seat and are generally more comfortable, if of ourse yor happy with that side of car and its advantages and drawbacks.

If there’s a potential discount on the Aircross full hybrid and you can get it for £500 or below, it still worth considering?

The issue with electric, is the inconvenience of never been able to charge at home, even if running costs were equall across the board, but its your deciion to make.

Are you making notes of likes dislikes of the cars you drive, given theres a gap between test drives.

@kezo oh yes i have a tick chart and a spreasheet lol. ex accounts bookkeeper so it ends up a bit anal.

mini test drive today omg they have improved it, its so well put together love the new fabrics etc the dash and door cards are super. not having a screen directly in front of you isnt a problem at all a little odd to start with and the new info screen will take some getting used to. the hud is ok not a deal breaker for me again i would need to play with it to get the display just right. i need to go through the specs of the 1.5c classic and the monochrome to see what i would lose if i chicken out and go petrol for £327.compared to 0ap andd £81.46 for the electric. £327 plus t/a weekly. the mini definateley over the c3 aircross and formentor.

the formentor test drive was good too much more saloonish much lower and seemed like a very long bonnet.

seat adjustment excellant all electric and memory and it does the thing where it pulls back when you open the door. you can tell they are aiming at a sportyish clientel, its definateley set up to drive it like you stole it the gear shifts and engine note are more boy racer than i am at the moment. but i could revert very easily.

not as comfortable over dents and potholes as the others but does have all the nice to haves.

mini in first place then c3 aircross then formentor, i have nissan test drives on friday but i cant see them beating mini.

                                                66kwh = 200 miles claimed 286 but thats usually a lie.

                                                docs 4 miles return

                                                dobbies 6 miles return

                                                morrisons 7 miles return.

apart from visiting car dealers i havent left the house since november, sad i know.

but lets say i get my s**t together and i go and do my physio 5 times a week thats 25 miles.

that would be my main journey so 200 range less 40 (20%) leaves 160 miles thats 6 weeks journies with 10 to spare.

if you add a doctors and a hospital thats 2 weeks worth in a week so reduces it to 4 weeks.

i reckon unless i find a hobby or something once a month will work absolute worse case 2 in a month.

                                                assuming i go all the way to 20% thats 53kwh @ say 60p =£31.80.

for context i filled up £50.70 on the 5th november and i still have half a tank.

so the electric will be more expensive per mile but not prohibitavely.

so at the moment i am minded to go the whole hog and get the monochrome.

i would reccomend having a look at the monochrome as it has more kit without having to pay for packs.

Have you thought about Volvo xc40, has lots of good things and if you’re not too bothered about mileage etc it looks ok for £397 ap
