Replacing wipers after 7 months

Hi all, I’ve had my Enyaq for 7 months now. During the last few weeks the wipers have become jerky, bouncing and not clearing screen well.

Obviously I’ve tried cleaning the blades and the screen but the problem returns. For the first 6 months I had no problems and the blades were quiet and flexible.

Yesterday I went into my Skoda dealership for some replacement blades.

Not straightforward, they had to put a request into Motability and wait for an authorisation, after 30 mins waiting the service department said , it could take a couple of hours to get a reply, so I left and awaited a call at home from them.

After 4 hours I got a call from Skoda, they said, Motability require a video showing the problem.

I am supposed to go back to the dealership (12 miles round trip) let them do a video, then submit this video and if they authorise, go back a third time to have them fitted.

I phoned Motability this morning to be told , the department that deals with dealership authorities don’t work weekends.

I pointed out, how I felt , that driving a vehicle in the wet without clear vision is a serious safety issue and if an accident occurred I could be in serious trouble for knowingly driving the vehicle. This made no difference and I was told , wait till Monday and comply with the video request.

Anyone else had a similar problem when needing a relatively minor maintenance repair?

      Regards, wonky

Every time after the second year service I have requested my worn wiper blades be replaced, I have been ignore every time, I have always brought and replacement myself.

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

Buy some Bosch, expensive but they last a lot longer and work a lot better.

          A284H Bosch Rear Wiper 11″ 280mm
          AP16U Bosch Aerotwin Multi-Clip 16″ 400mm
          AP28U Bosch Aerotwin Multi-Clip 28″ 700mm

Not used them but indscreenwipersdirect.co.uk get good reviews on the Skoda Elroq & Enyaq UK FB group  or Amazon of course.

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

Might need legal action as could be MOT failure and cause an accident if you cannot see clearly it is so stupid you pay over £77 a week to have a safe car to drive and anything that needs replacing with dealer saying it then done straight away. There is a case when safety is involved of not fit for purpose.

motability do seem to have a thing about wipers, partly i think due to dealers trying it on at service time. i ended up sat around for 2 hours when the juke went in as i asked to wait as it was the easier option and the garage reccomendd the wipers be replaced and motability wanted the video evidence. when i complained to the motability service people about the wait they said firstly i should have contacted them and they would have sorted a taxi which i didnt even know that was an option. but they claimed they refused because the video sent was of a different car. now how they would know that i dont know but i havent had an issue with the wipers either before or after so go figure. they are the same wipers on now.

however as it was the driver reporting the wipers as faulty i dont understand motabilitys position at all.

I can’t say I’ve had any problems with wiper blades renewals, previous KIA car renewed at 2 years no questions asked and current VW renewed at 2 years and no problems. My other 3 Motability cars from years ago never needed there blades renewed, blades must have been more robust back then.

The VW was last Spring so don’t know if something has changed since then but MB are certainly scrutinising everything these days that sort of puts the “worry free motoring for the disabled” saying as nothing more than run of the mill advertising BS.

I initially clean my screen and blades with methylated spirits to remove the grease, even so my driver blade is on it way out, I will just replace both when the weather picks up, it’s initially my responsibility to keep the car in a safe roadworthy condition.

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

This is the correct answer imo. I have yet to own a car which doesn’t have crap factory wipers, it’s the first purchase every car gets.

Aerotwins are so much better than factory wipers, it’s not even funny. Not only do they last longer, they’re also quieter. Had them on all cars for over more than a decade now.

As for repairs in general, the only reference i have is normal unscheduled repairs (Brake disc and steering rack on the Golf, USB port on the I6), all of which were authorised within minutes.

But, i assume like Phaedra, if the choice is between sub-par factory wipers for free or much higher quality wipers for my own (somewhat modest amount, wouldn’t spend hundreds of course) money, i’ll go with that. Saves me a lot of time and hassle, plus a superior product.

In fact, the ones Phaedra mentioned there are the same ones we had on the Golf funny enough. Definitely worth the money, vast improvement over the factory ones (which i assume were the same between Enyaq and Golf then as well).

Just order some Bosch blades from Halford SP26 £11.99 and SP16 £6.99.

Hi all,  many thanks for replies.

Part of me wants to go head to head with Motability, particularly as it’s a safety issue.

If it gets silly and starts wasting more time, I’ll cut my losses and purchase Bosch ones as recommended by , Phaedra and Rene.

                        Thanks again,  regards, wonky

I remember my dad used to use the old meth cleaning the blades many moons ago and it does the job and that water dispersal stuff helps as well I think it is rain X but there are other makes as well.

I have used for many years Halfords -20 degree C screen wash in the summer 5:1 ratio, this time of year 3:1, I mix it with rainwater from my water barrels.

We just generally replace them ourselves when they need it, £25 over three years works ok for us (of course I understand MB should be paying)

Ditto to all above: only this weekend purchased on Amazon A284H Bosch Rear Wiper 11″ 280mm rear wiper for mine. Should be arriving later today.

In general Motability became to be terrible in supporting the drivers. I am for one still waiting for the ombudsman – they did not agree with ombudsman’s mediator (negotiator or whatever they call the little man, running between two parties, trying to appease the biggest one) so now it is with their upper echelon to make final decision.

I get Kwik Fit to change my wipers (standard bosch blades), not because I’m a skinflint🤔 but because I get a guaranteed parking to pop into town, whilst awaiting authorisation and for them to be be fitted. Rearely do I have a proplem with KF, I guess because they don’t charge extortionate prices main dealer do. I also use KF for third year MOT, save going back to dealer.

On my own car (220d), I have Lucas AiroFlex (free trial), they are as good as Aerotwins, but noisy back and forth. Denso Hybrid are also decent.
