If you have road tax applied disability exemption applied to your motability car and you wanted this to be the case, the rest of my thread won’t be of any interest to you

If you like me are a new motability customer coming to their first anniversary and have an EV, I began to wonder how I would pay the road fund licence which UKG have introduced. I checked motability website as I hadn’t got any renewal and couldn’t see a portal to pay so  I messaged them about it and had what could have been a nasty surprise.

My car when I collected it was zero for road tax. This is because at that time, EV’s were zero tax. I specifically and definitely informed the dealership verbally  that I was keeping disability tax exemption on our other car in the household and that it shouldn’t be applied to the motability vehicle. They said it’s no problem and in any case, “EV’s are zero tax so its no issue”.

Off I went and, of course, didn’t get a V5 in the post as its kept with motability. Ive found out only because I have asked motability how I pay the tax, that the dealer did apply exemption to the car whilst I had exemption against my other vehicle. Technically, I guess it could be classed as fraudulent behaviour by the DWP/DVLA as you can only have disability tax applied to one vehicle.

Motability have requested that DVLA amend it now  but only because I was concerned I hadn’t received any renewal and thought I would be needing to pay the new rate for EV’s for year 2 and made contact.

I explained to motability that if my experience is anything to go by, anyone else who has taken an EV in the past  and has  disability tax applied to another ev which was zero rated  may be in the dark that they will need to start paying for tax but that the exemption has been incorrectly applied to the motability car by the dealership.

It is me who would be liable to pay the tax even though it’s the mess of someone else and it would be me who DVLA/DWP lambast if they were to find out.

I guess what I am trying to get across is a friendly warning  that f you have an EV and are coming up to a renewal which will see the cost increase from zero to whatever the new rate is, don’t presume that because a reminder hasn’t dropped though your letterbox that all is fine. Make contact with motability to issue yourself. I will be asking (via the online motability account) for a copy of the V5 registration document from now on in to ensure the class of vehicle is correct.

I now know that the DVLA will send me directly the tax demand, it doesn’t get administered through Motability for cars that don’t have disability rate applied. Fortunate to get another year at zero rate because  of the date my car was registered but next ear I’ll have the tax demand directly sent to me to pay.
