Previous car:Peugeot 308 GT Premium 1.2 Pure tech Petrol.February 14, 2021 at 9:50 am #139824Tricky question, Brydo. I don’t know enough about some makes to come to a sound judgement but for those of which I have experience:
1, Skoda. Great build-quality and performance.
2, Other VAG makes, as above.
3. BMW/Mini. Good quality and performance. Shame Motability has dumped the really good models like 3-Series etc. Mini is totally bonkers but deeply enjoyable.
3. Alfa. So wish I’d got the Giulia when it was on scheme.
Would have to put Vauxhall and, maybe, Ford near the bottom. The former’s cars in my experience are dull, underpowered and do not handle. Similarly Ford; very unimaginative although I understand the latest Focus and Fiesta are quite good. Latter’s ST not on scheme, of course.
February 14, 2021 at 12:04 pm #139835Going for the only thirteen that matter:
Hyundai – Kia – MG – Renault – Peugeot – Citroen – DS – Vauxhall – SEAT – Nissan – Honda – Smart – Mazda
This is a very easy to rate, if the company currently has no EVs on the scheme then it gets relegated to junk (BMW dropped the i3 from the scheme so it went to junk), and after that it’s all about range & value for money.
Oh, I haven’t said anything about the SEAT Mii electric yet, well, it’s so much cheaper to lease elsewhere, it’s a great little town car, but severely overpriced on the Motability Scheme.
The Mazda looks great but the range is from 2017, not 2021.
Nissan’s Leaf 62kW would restore it to a higher place as would the Ariya.
Renault’s Zoe is great, but that seating position is a bit high, great for those with a more restrained height.

Clipped wingsAs a driver with muscular atrophy and other nasties, it is horses for courses which rules out many brands. MPV/SUV with big boot/hoist and automatic a must. Tried the new Kuga. Poor access. Peugeot’s better but there were snags. BMW/ mini small boot. VAG fitted the bill. Added niceties: electric tailgate a boon. Ditto KESSY. Auto headlights. No stupid touch controls. Self sealing tyres. Roof rails for aiding stability transferring from boot to door. Superb seats. Heated seats and steering wheel helps seizing hands. As for EVs etc. Great if you can cope with unwieldy cables on a freezing winters night. For me a hazardous nightmare. Allspace/Tarraco/Kodiaq/Touran a perfect physically disabled persons car IMHO

sifDepends on the criteria, best car, best value, biggest range, most economic, sporty, badge appeal, etc etc etc. In terms of pure motability, range offered and affordability might be more important for the average user.

Clipped wingsNot tried CRV/RAV4as v expensive on scheme.
February 14, 2021 at 1:27 pm #139850clipped wings, a change of topic, how is your mum and the other people in her care home. I seem to remember they had covid and had their jabs.

Very much this.
Ford with 8 models and 211 versions on the Motability scheme would appear to be well ahead of the others for range offered and affordability. Volvo has 1 model with 18 versions.
The Fiesta, Focus, Puma and Kuga are all rated very highly in their respective categories by the motoring press. They just don’t have the badge.
Obviously Ford don’t compare favourable to the big German manufacturers when you’re talking about the full range of vehicles offered outside of Motability and if money was no object.

Clipped wingsThanks Brydo,
Clinging on to life, but only just. My brother visited her today with full PPE/ COVID swab. Not normally allowed, but compassion prevailed. There have been an undisclosed number of fatalities since COVID swept through staff and 48 residents. All vaccinated with Phiser on Jan 4th. I remain very uneasy about the single shot policy, which is not embraced by the rest of the world or its German BionTec inventor. Time will tell on the great uk gamble.

BrydoSorry to hear that CW fingers crossed that she pulls through, this is a terrible time and if they have made a mistake with this single dose procedure we will be in even more trouble ???
February 14, 2021 at 9:35 pm #139905ClippedWings – so sorry to hear of your ma’s plight. Our best wishes to you and her. Live in hope…

machocoIts not the brands it the choice of cars that should be rated and desire and practicality cant always be achieved with them.

Clipped wingsThanks Brydo, Tharg.
I racked up 500+ miles in the first week of Touran lease – properly run in. At present rate of progress, that mileage will take 3 months. A visit to Hereford is not going to happen anytime soon, sadly. MPG etc have been irrelevant in the last year. Just trying to keep the battery fully charged at the moment. The excitement of a new car somewhat diminished.
February 15, 2021 at 2:00 pm #1399582nd to 5th Hyuundai, Kia, Skoda, SEAT. But in 1st place has to be SSanyong, even without the prospect of a Rexton!
