Can anyone help me and tell me how to change my private number from the vehicle I have now to my new vehicle which I should get around the end of November. Dealership said they have to put registration on my new vehicle and I’ve got to retain my private number and get a number for my old vehicle and unsure how this is done also the time I’ve got to do it.

Its all done online through dvla, google it.
You will have to go online and remove theregistered number from your old vehicle first and have it on retention.
When you get your new vehicle, it easily done through motability website.
Look on the motability website for nore info.
September 2, 2025 at 2:07 pm #312201When you contact the dvla and pay for a retention of the private plate can you still use the plate on the vehicle till your new vehicle arrives as it’s not due to be available till end of November. Also I haven’t got the original number to put on the car I’m sending back how do I get the number that’s goon the car when I give it back.Do I have to contact the DVLA for that? Thank you for your reply Woodpecker.

go to the above put in the details, they will give you reg number for the car online and by email as soon as you complete the transfer.
September 2, 2025 at 4:35 pm #312209Both Mazda and Skoda dealerships did for me with the previous vehicles. I only had to notify them I have my personal number plate and they charged me £85. Not sure why to contact DVLA?

September 2, 2025 at 4:39 pm #312211There is the problem, when you DO put the plate on retention, you have 3 days to change over the plate to the old reg. The problem is they also send you a form, its only valid for 3 days to go and get the old numberplate made up at dingbro or halfords or whatever. You cannot use your old number, you must use the new number and you can only get the plate made up if you have the 3 day form dvla supplies ir you have to wait on the V5 being sent out. You will also have to inform you insurance company of the new reg number, otherwise you will be classed as uninsured and have plod stopping you every few days.
September 2, 2025 at 4:42 pm #312212Mobility have the V5C logbook so I can’t get the reference number to fill the link in you sent me
September 2, 2025 at 5:48 pm #312215You can ask motability for a copy of the V5.
If you want to take your private number off a motability car, logon to your motability account and do it from there.
Probably better if you just phone and ask motability what you want to do.

do you have an online motability account? You can get the reference number from that.
A lot of dealers can no longer register any cars with a private plate some can but a lot can’t.
I don’t think they are sending the number plate form out anymore. I got a new reg for a N.Ireland number recently and no form came with it.
you can buy a new set of number plates on eBay for £15.00 including delivery.
September 3, 2025 at 8:03 am #312224I use a different approach, which does not rely upon dealerships and I find to be extremely easy. Basically, I follow these steps;
1) I take delivery of the car with the normal dealer assigned plates.
2) After a period of time (usually when the date prefix is no longer the ‘current’ new reg 😂) I do the online application to assign the private plate (no cost as the plate is on retention – see step 4).
3) I drive to Halfords and when parked in their car park I unscrew the plates and hand them to the technician, so that when they make up the new private plates they can drill the holes in the same positions. I screw the new plates on the car and drive home, storing the original plates in my garage.
4) Just before the car is due to go back, I do the online retention (£85 cost) and the registration number that the car had when I took delivery is always reassigned. As I already have those plates with the correct pre-drilled holes, I just swap them with the private plates at home. Takes 5 minutes.
Total cost of the above is the £85 retention and the cost of the plates, and each process can be done simply at a time to suit me.

The thing about ebay plates is they are illegal. It just gives plod a chance to pull you over, especially if your personalised plate has unrealistic spacing etc.
No doubt plod will have a crackdown and you leave yourself wide open. Its ok doing that on your own car, its your responsibility.
But do that on a motability lease car is a different matter. I do the same as glos guy, its easier and less hassle.
September 3, 2025 at 11:35 am #312243which part of those plates are illegal.

They look fine, but I use Halfords as they drill the holes at no extra cost and if the plate cracks (as it did when I did it once🙄) it’s down to them!
September 3, 2025 at 12:02 pm #312248It was the all eBay plates are illegal I was getting at.

They are all illegal.
To get a legal set of plates made up you have to produce your V5 or V773( something like that) and must be traceable to the garage that made them. They also have to display the kitemark thingy that they are made in the uk.
September 3, 2025 at 4:30 pm #312261I dont understand how you can say they are illegal below is from their description, they have sold thousands of sets of number plates.
Please note: these are Road Legal number plates so we will require a proof of ownership (such as logbook or retention document) AND a form of ID.
Spacing will be as it appears on your V5. If you type it in a different way, rest assured we WILL correct it before making the plate.
September 3, 2025 at 4:49 pm #312263It was the all eBay plates are illegal I was getting at.
So if Halfords or any reputable motor factors (which do) sell through ebay, they would be illegal?
I don’t get why because, I recently got a par for the 220d’s MOT. They required proof of ownership (V5 or retention document), ID and are traceble with the companies name (not visable on the listing), so traceable and have BS no. on them however, you should always read the listing.

That is correct, but was I confused with my last reply (wouldn’t be suprised)
September 3, 2025 at 5:05 pm #312265They also have to display the kitemark
Even my Motability cars plates don’t have the Kitemark, rather a BS number.

Yes indeed that is what I meant, BS thingy I called it the kitemark cos i couldnt remember an that is what it used to be called.
To make and sell number plates you must be registered with the dvla as an authorised supplier, they have a code name for that as well. Halfords is authorised, the ebay guy is not or he would supply his dvla authorisation number or code. It used to be that they had to be made in the uk, but they slacked off on that stipulation.
As i said if its your own car, fill your boots an go for it. But its a motability car probably better stay within the law.
September 4, 2025 at 8:44 am #312287The company selling on eBay have their postcode the name of the supplier which it them and the BS number. I don’t see what you are getting at.

Thats cool, just leave it at that then.
September 25, 2025 at 7:28 pm #313038I don’t know if you have noticed, but I have personal plates on my car and niw on the your motability website pages, under current lease, there is now a click button to remove your plates from your car

This is definitely the best way to do it, just need someone able to swap the physical number plates around
