I have two main options for now (unless things change in September):
BYD Sealion 7
VW ID.7
Both comfortable for me and provide enough space in the boot too. Can the forum suggest on the following, please?
1. What should I be looking for / what out with pre reg car? I am happy with the pre reg we leased in March, but this one I will be purchasing outright.
2. Can I push down on the already low price?
3. Can I press on to throw in service(s) and manufacturer (not dealer) extended full (max possible) warranty?
4. Anything else?

As long as the specification and colour combination meets your preferences, the only issue is that when you eventually sell it on it won’t be ‘one owner from new’ which will affect the value, but not by a lot.
As a result, you need to make sure that you get a good deal – more than you’d get with a brand new factory order. I would be wanting at least 20% off the new price for a pre reg car, certainly with the VW as they discount by at least 15-20% on new cars and EVs usually more.
All prices are always negotiable though, so even if the discount is that (or more) I’d still be negotiating!
The car will obviously have the balance of the manufacturers warranty. Some extended warranties are conditional on being purchased within a short period of the car being registered (mine was within 14 days, but it will vary). With my BMW I got 15% (plus 20% VAT) off a 5 year servicing plan but no discount on the extended warranty (I could live with that, as it was the same price for a top end X5 as an entry level X1, so I felt I got a bargain anyway)!
Good luck.
August 30, 2026 at 7:31 pm #377997A pre reg is a technically a brand new car the dealership has already registered in their name, as the first owner and should have close to zero mileage on it, as a new car would!
The manufacturers warrant starts from the registration date, with the remaining balance passed over to the 2nd buyer. Some manufacturers include a limited years warranty if you have the car serviced at a main dealer or its typically a third party route, to extend.
If the vehicle includes manufacturer service plan, you will these included – If the manufacturer does not include a manufacturer include services, this will have to be negotiated at dealer level and could be used as a bargaining chip.
Pre reg cars often loose the equivulent to the VAT amount, but this can vary across manufacturers and the general rule is a 10-25% discount on new but again this is manufacturer deppendant.
You’d expect to get some wiggle room on the asking price however, how much wiggle room, often depends how popular the car is and how much interest there is, if there is only one pre reg in stock.
You should be able to negotiate a discount for having no part x.
The time of the month/year also matters.
August 30, 2026 at 9:14 pm #377998Thank you, both. How far in advance I need to notify Motability that I want to remove my personal number plate? I know I can notify them via the website, but what will be the lead time as well as if any action will be required from me (to pop into the garage or something to replace the number plates)?
Moving from one MB to another MB vehicle was very simple – just tell the dealer. I wonder how it works from MB out into the free world.

Personally, I would start by putting your private plate on retention, so it’s free from Motability and their car. I can’t remember the process when the car is owned by Motability, but it must be dead easy or I would remember it! Give them a call and they will explain, but I’d do that a few months before you hand the car back.
Once your plate is on retention it’s even easier, as it’s all within your control. The process to assign the plate on your next car depends on whether you want the dealer to assign the number to a brand new car as it’s first registration, or whether you assign it at a later stage (also applies if the car is pre registered).
I couldn’t assign my plate (which was on retention) to my new car at registration, because it was retained in my wife’s name (as the previous car it had been on was a Motability car and she was the customer, even though I was the sole driver 🙄), so I took delivery of the car with a regular registration. If the plate is retained in your name, you simply give the retention certificate to the dealer and they will deal with it for you. Job done.
If you can’t do this, for example because it’s a pre-registered car, it’s a different process. In fact, I assigned my private plate to my new (private) car last week.
The process is online and took all of 5 minutes. It’s free, as the fee that you pay to put the plate on retention covers the reassignment fee. Word of warning, you used to have (from memory) up to 3 days from when you made the registration change until you had to display the new reg. Now,as soon as you make the change online you have to display the new reg on the car.
Previously I used to do the change online, drive to Halfords with the certificate authorising the new plates, remove the old plates in their car park, take them inside the store and ask them to drill the holes in the same places on the new plates, and then fix the new plates on the car before driving home. As that entails a 20 minute drive, technically I can no longer do that. I couldn’t even have done the online process in their car park, having driven there, as you need to print off the authorisation form for the plates to be made up
When you do the process online there is a box where you can input your postcode and it tells you the nearest plate supplier. Much to my surprise (and relief), there is a former Land Rover dealer in my village (now Isuzu) and they are listed as supplying them!
Therefore, the process I followed was;
1) Make the change online (you need the V5 and the retention certificate). I already had the retention certificate but had to wait until I received the V5 in my name. No charge for this process and it took 5 minutes.
2) I unscrewed the original plates off the car and walked to the dealer with them so that they could use them as a template to drill the holes in the new ones. You have to take the authorisation form that the online process generates, plus ID (driving licence) with you.
3) The dealership (who could not have been more helpful) made up the plates and we agreed together where the drill holes would be before he made them. They charged me £42 for the pair (Halfords charge £36).
4) I walked back home and screwed the new plates on to the car and have retained the original ones in my garage. When I am going to change cars again, I will put the private reg on retention, and the original reg number will automatically be reassigned to the car, and as I already have those plates it’s a 5 minute job to swap the plates over, and doesn’t require a visit to get new ones made or drilled.
That probably all sounds very complicated, but it was dead easy – even for me!

Can I ask @kezo and @Glos-Guy, About 20 years ago I went to a dealer with my ex girlfriend, for her to buy a car and the dealer was trying to sell her a car, which was obviously pre registered, but not declared to her as such. But the dealer was trying to tell her that the dealership would have to hold on to the registration documents for six month’s after she bought the car. I obviously told her to not even consider buying it.
But what I am wondering is, if either of you, or anyone else has heard of this happening.
August 31, 2026 at 1:17 pm #378031cars cannot be pre registered to qualify for VAT so you will not be able to purchase a pre registered car
So it could be a ruse by the garage to entice you in or the guy does not understand the Motability requirements

Never heard of that and you were wise to walk away. Pre-registered cars have to be declared as such, as they are worth less than a car where the buyer will be the first registered keeper.

Common in the motor industry!
If a dealer registers a vehicle in their name or as a demonstrator, its more than likely so they can qualify for manufacturer discounts. In which case they are usually required to keep it in their name for a fixed period, usually 3 months or the remainder of.
Some dealers will tell you to pay a deposit and they will put the car in storage, till the time has elapsed, other will let you have and keep the V5 in their name for the remaing period before transfering into your name.
The dealer should say upfront, but its important you query this before buying and be upfront if you want the V5 in your name a point of sale however, this is not guaranteed because of how the system works. ( @kdwolf )
Technically you are still the legal owner from the moment you receive the paid sales inovoice.
I purcgased my pre reg 220d on these terms.

Motability VW Touran Family Pack May 2019 (happy customer)August 31, 2026 at 3:21 pm #378057@kezo That’s bizarre! If the V5 remains in the dealers name then you are not the registered keeper. That would cause issues with insurance (unless you had declared that you were not the registered keeper) and pose an interesting conundrum should you incur any speeding fines or whatever whilst the dealership is still the registered keeper. Sounds like a minefield to me!

That’s what I thought, that’s why we walked away.
It reminds me of the time, I once gave a Dealer a Banker’s Draft for my Motability AP, just as the sales people were carrying boxes out the showroom, which was apparently shutting. They then lost the Banker’s Draft and then started sending me stronger and stronger letter’s from their accountant demanding payment
I phoned explaining that it wasn’t a cheque. it was a Banker’s Draft, which I had effectively bought from the Bank. The accountant was very agreeable, unlike his letter’s, but then left shortly afterwards (presumably knowing the Dealership was going under),but the letters kept coming in from the Dealership.
Fortunately the Dealer used the same bank as me and it was sorted out, just before the Large Glasgow multi Dealership went out of business.
August 31, 2026 at 7:19 pm #378059DVLA are well aware of the 90 day practice!
If you take delivery of the car and write to the DVLA explaining that you are the owner and keeper of the car and provide proof they will send you a V5 😉
There was a 2012 court case brought by Richard Sanders founder of Drive the Deal on the matter, its highligted in the BBC link bellow, but I can’t find it. After winning it took the industry nearly a decade to clean up, with the last forum post, I can find on the subject on a Skoda site in October 2021. So hopefully the industry has cleaned itself up by now.

@kdwolf is looking at purchasing privately, which has no reflecton on Motability rules and has not mention VAT exemption, as far as I’m aware.August 31, 2026 at 7:34 pm #378061DVLA are well aware of the 90 day practice! That article confirms my concerns, and adds some others as well. It sounds like a right dogs dinner. I wouldn’t touch a car sold under those conditions with a barge pole!
August 31, 2026 at 9:16 pm #378062The BYD Dolphin Surf we leased this March was also pre reg (30.12.2025) and had no issue, although perhaps the leasing company dealt with the matter.
The cars I am interested are either March or June 2026 registered and DVLA website shows them as taxed, so by the time Motability will collect my Skoda, it will be last week of September (first of October) and hopefully no issue.

I figured that it must be very straightforward, as I don’t recall having any problems. As you say, best to give them a call though. As an aside, I’ve had my private plate for over 10 years and had it on several cars, but at long last it’s now correct for the car 🤣 (the masked 3 letters are my initials)

674 miles in August @kezo (so I am using it!) and a quite incredible 29.3 mpg. Had I been able to resist some supersonic blasts in Sport mode on occasions I could have exceeded 30 mpg! When choosing between the V8 and the diesel I did my maths assuming 20-22 mpg, so quite a result. Talking of V8’s, I take it you’ve had no luck finding a Rover 75 yet?

Around half the price of this one, I would buy, but they are either more than I’m willing to pay for a 20 year old 1-2 owner car or need alot of work. I dropped on the V6 I gave my daughter, which was like new having known the owner & family who bought it from new and how it was looked after. Even today alot of car for just under £1800 and daughters had not one issue “touch wood”
Nice seats and very comfortable to
