Pensioners have more penalty points than young drivers

More than 304,000 pensioners (over 65s) currently have penalty points on their driving licence, which is almost 25 times the number of young teenage drivers.

The findings come from a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the DVLA by IAM RoadSmart.

It was also revealed that the oldest person driving with points on their licence was 102, while there are more than 3,000 people over the age of 90 currently driving with penalty points.

Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart director of Policy & Research, said: “The findings from our Freedom of Information request are surprising. Speeding and other motoring misdemeanours are often associated with younger drivers but the findings clearly show there is a large number of older drivers also flouting the rules.

“Regardless of age, the message we need to get through is that road safety is paramount and we urge drivers of all ages to stick to the speed limits and ensure their vehicles are in a roadworthy condition.

Overall, there are more drivers in their 30s with penalty points than any other age range (575,029), closely followed by those in their 40s (572,238) and then by those in their 50s (568,511). The highest single age with the greatest number of people with points was 49 (63,248).

Additional findings from the FOI discovered that there is up to 8,800 people still driving with more than 12 points – the amount at which you are disqualified – while the highest number of penalty points currently held by one individual is 68.

Greig added: “We also urge government to urgently revisit the issue of drivers with more than 12 points who still have not had their licences revoked. IAM RoadSmart has been raising this issue for almost a decade now and the problem still persists. It’s not by chance that certain drivers amass 12 or more points and they need to be removed from the public roads. By letting them keep their licence it undermines the simple “four strikes and you’re out” message and this urgently needs to be addressed.”

I’d be interested to know how those points were earned for each age group and what proportion were from speed camera offences.

I’d be interested to know why you even posted this as it’s basically the same article you posted 6 hours ago, just spamming for no point?

Here we go again. Brydo you really do post to get a reaction out of people. I don’t know why you haven’t been banned from this site .

Am I missing something here? Brydo often posts copy and paste stuff from things he finds interesting. In what way is he trying to get a reaction from you?  If you don’t find it interesting, why not just pass by?

Because at 13:48 today he posted “8,800 drivers on UK roads with 12 points”, basically the same article, with the same points in it.

The forum rules class this I believe as spam, see below

Forum users mustn’t post the same comments more than once on the forum (the only exception are the moderators and the keymaster when needed). It’s called spamming and most internet forums forbid it. Where spam is detected, the posts are deleted and the user’s posting privileges may be removed.

And to be honest, what has this to do with disability motoring too?

I’m not anti Brydo, but I do think a lot of the posts he puts up totally irrelevant to what the forum is meant to be about, nearly 1300 topics started, sadly not many are what this forum is surely meant to be about, DISABILITY motoring!

Woow some strong words, I join forums of which car I own for the information shared, having a disability has never been a problem if if I ask any questions.

Should I be banned from a none disabled forum for posting ANYTHING about disability motoring.

                    NO is the answer.

sometimes it’s refreshing to step out of the disability badge.

I read the post by Brydo, in fact wouldn’t have thought the figures are how they stand.

Thanks Brydo for passing time of a painful night for me..

It really is so simple. If you’re not interested in an article then don’t click on it and don’t read it. As for banning people, really? Just live and let live, get on with your life and let other people get on with theirs.

I don’t think it really matters who started a thread. The most important thing is that it was started. More threads allow more activity on the forum. Without Brydo’s posts the forum would certainly be a much quieter place

Personally I found it quite an interesting read.

I am new on here and joined because I enjoy all aspects of motoring.
Yes, I’m disabled and a Motability customer so posts about this are relevant but surely variety is to be welcomed.
If  you don’t want to read a “non disabled” post, surely easier to scroll past ??‍♂️

Back to the subject of the thread – in my experience (I’m retired police & ex traffic) the older generation tend to commit offences due to lack of concentration or lack of awareness. The younger generation tends to be risk taking and/or ignorance of consequences. Summary being older generation is a larger proportion of mistakes, younger is dangerous/aggressive driving.

Just an observation that I hope doesn’t offend anyone.

As a relative newcomer, I do find most of Mr Brydo’s posts interesting. However, may I ask him to quote the source of his postings?

That way the reader can establish if it is from a reliable source or accredited motoring authority and weigh its value accordingly. Or, if it is from such as the Daily Fail, take it with a huge pinch of salt as I think we all know what tripe they put on their website.

As Mr Brydo doesn’t quote the source it is sometimes difficult to establish the gravitas of the information posted. Please Mr Brydo, don’t take this as a criticism, just a request.

One to check out brydo,is the semi conducter issue, the chips for cars in short supply, some factories have been closed for a week , or cut back production, not just the covid problem ,but due to lack of these chips so cars getting longer for delivery. Look for a new thread on this issue,as all people who are due to order will be interested

According to the Financial Times the chip shortages are due to lockdowns around the World.

Not as you would expect because folk can’t get to work or who are to sick to make chips but because of folk furloughed there all buying game consuls, laptops and the likes to keep busy at home and I can vouch for that having renewed my TV with it’s latest PC chips on board.

Apparently the motor industry only use about 10% of the Worlds chips so don’t carry any clout when demanding there orders are fulfilled and there’s more money for chip manufactures in chips for 5G phones and Sony Playstations than cars.
