OVO EV Tariffs

Can someone help me understand how OVO EV tariffs work, please?

I went to their website,  provided my postcode and received what seems to be a usual, non EV quote.  Then they have EV menu,  where I could see EV monthly packages – up to 8,000 miles pa, etc.

Am I correct to understand that the total cost is summary of the two? Asking as it is three times higher than what I am paying on a monthly basis to E.On, which is due for renewal first week of May.

Its a bit like Octopus, you just cant sign up for the ev tarriff. You have to join the flexible tariff, once you are on that,THEN tou can change to the ev tarriff.

Best guess is OVO  will be similar, just email OVO customer service or helpline and get the lowdown in how to join their ev tariff.

It is infuriating as their systems are as clear as mud.

            helpline

I would call it a hell line rather than helpline. I can’t hear some of frequencies, so my speech is affected a bit and their AI first system doesn’t understand what I want. So finished with them. Will try EDF or Scottish Power.

Ovo Charge Anytime is an add on to any of Ovo’s tariffs.

Currently Charge Anytime (CA) is 14p kWh.

You don’t need to signup for any of their EV monthly plans if not needed, else CA is labelled as PAYG.

Unlike some energy suppliers, there is no fixed “cheap window.” As long as you let OVO’s tech decide when to pull the power, you get the 14p rate regardless of the time of day.

You must have a smart meter & charger or vehicle that is on there compatibility list tho.
EV charging credit will be applied to the following month’s bill.

The down side is CA is currently 14p per kWh & the favoured charger installed for Motability, Ohme is no longer compatible with Ovo.

If Ovo CA can’t communicate with the linked device (you live in a black hole, lost comms, equipment error) no smart charging recorded so no credit for EV charging.

Example: if your current Ovo tarif is 24p per kWh / Ovo Charge Anytime rate is 14p per kWh,

The difference of 10p per kWh used for EV charging only will be credited to your following months bill.

              From ovo

How does Charge Anytime pay as you go work?
All the electricity you use in your home and for smart charging will initially be charged at your standard home electricity rate. This is the rate you’ll see in your balance and on your bill.

At the end of the month, we’ll work out how much energy you’ve used to smart charge your EV. We’ll use this to calculate how much credit we need to add to your account. This will be applied in the following month.

Thank you @Tom for taking time to provide such a detailed explanation. The tariff of 14p is terrible in comparison to 3.5 I am paying with E On at the moment.

                  No worries @kdwolf

For me, heavy usage for the house, only need to charge every 10 to 14 days atm.

Any increase to the general day rate (no matter how small) doesn’t offset any savings gained on any cheaper EV charging.

                  Tom…
